current investigations indicate different in vitro infection patterns for oka and dumas strains. infection of cells in culture with dumas strain produces lower number of infectious particles while the oka strain is highly infectious in vitro. it is postulated that weak expression of the replication genes in dumas strain may be the reason for the attenuated phenotype. the objective of this stud...

Varicella zoster virus (VZV), a member of the herpesvirus family, is responsible for both primary (varicella, chickenpox) as well as reactivation (zoster, shingles) infections. In immunocompetent patients, the course of varicella is generally benign. For varicella zoster, post-herpetic neuralgia is the most common complication. In immunocompromised patients (particularly those with AIDS), trans...

To study the role of CD8 T cells in the control of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) reactivation, we developed multimeric major histocompatibility complexes to identify VZV-specific CD8 T cells. Potential HLA-A2 binding peptides from the putative immediate-early 62 protein (IE62) of VZV were tested for binding, and peptides with sufficient binding capacity were used to generate pentamers. Patients ...

INTRODUCTION Infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV) was first documented in the writings of ancient civilizations as a vesicular rash of unknown causes. A relationship between herpes zoster and chickenpox was suggested in 1888 and was finally proven in the 1950s. Since then, much progress has been made in preventing and treating the disease with the introduction of a live attenuated vaccin...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Varicella-Zoster virus (VZV) is a human herpes virus that usually attacks young children and commonly causes chicken pox (Varicella). Following primary infection, a lifelong latent infection is established. The virus often reactivates during adulthood or senesces to cause shingles (Zoster). Little is known regarding the genotypes of Varicella in Kuwait. The aim of this...

To assess the incidence of and risk factors associated with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection, we conducted a retrospective chart review of 418 consecutive patients who underwent HCT between April 2005 and March 2007. The male/female ratio was 221/197, median age at HCT was 47 years (range: 0-69 years), and autolog...

Here we describe for the first time the productive in vitro infection of human retinal pigment epithelial cells by varicella-zoster virus (VZV), resulting in a typical cytopathic effect (CPE) that is characterized by enlarged cells with increased granularity. Depending on the CPE dissemination, high titers of up to 1.6 x 10(6) PFU of cell-free and cryostable VZV/ml can be recovered.

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection has not often been related to the development of Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS). However, the close temporal relationship noted between varicella infection and the onset of GBS suggests the participation of VZV in the etiopathogenesis of GBS. Very few cases have been reported showing this relationship. This report describes 2 cases highly suggestive of this...

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) encodes six genes that do not have homologs in herpes simplex virus. One of these genes, VZV open reading frame 2 (ORF2), was expressed as a 31-kDa phosphoprotein in the membranes of infected cells. Unlike equine and bovine herpesvirus type 1 ORF2 homologs that are associated with virions, VZV virions contained no detectable ORF2 protein. The ORF2 deletion mutant es...

INTRODUCTION Progressive outer retinal necrosis (PORN) is a rare but devastating infectious retinitis associated with varicella zoster virus (VZV) and responsible for severe visual loss. CASE REPORT A 59-year-old man treated for generalized myasthenia with oral azathioprine and prednisone presented with severe unilateral necrotizing retinitis. Polymerase chain reaction of the aqueous and vitr...
