Developing accurate but inexpensive methods for estimating above-ground carbon biomass is an important technical challenge that must be overcome before a carbon offset market can be successfully implemented. Previous studies have shown that full-waveform LiDAR (light detection and ranging) is well suited for modeling above-ground biomass in mature forests; however, there has been little previou...

Aboveground biomass (AGB) of forests is an essential component of the global carbon cycle. Mapping above-ground biomass is important for estimating CO2 emissions, and planning and monitoring of forests and ecosystem productivity. Remote sensing provides wide observations to monitor forest coverage, the Landsat 8 mission provides valuable opportunities for quantifying the distribution of above-g...

We report above-ground biomass (AGB), basal area, stem density and wood mass density estimates from 260 sample plots (mean size: 1.2 ha) in intact closed-canopy tropical forests across 12 African countries. Mean AGB is 395.7 Mg dry mass ha⁻¹ (95% CI: 14.3), substantially higher than Amazonian values, with the Congo Basin and contiguous forest region attaining AGB values (429 Mg ha⁻¹) similar to...

Billy Watson and Bryce Stokes ABSTRACT: The cost and utilization were compared for a thinning operation removing the stems as roundwood with a flail chipper operationThe flail chipper operation recovered an additional 4.2 tons of acceptable chips per acre which resulted in a higher return to the site. There was little difference in the cost of acceptable chips delivered to the digester between ...

This study demonstrates the potentials of IRS P6 LISS-IV high-resolution multispectral sensor (IGFOV 6 m)-based estimation of biomass in the deciduous forests in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, India. Regression equations describing the relationship between IRS P6 LISS-IV data-based vegetation index (NDVI) and field measured leaf area index (ELAI) and estimated above-ground biomass (EAGB) were ...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Prior work has shown that above- and below-ground dry biomass across individual plants scale in a near isometric manner across phyletically and ecologically diverse species. Allometric theory predicts that a similar isometric scaling relationship should hold true across diverse forest-types, regardless of vegetational composition. METHODS To test this hypothesis, two compe...

Roots comprise the lesselknown part of the soil-plantatmosphere continuum and yet are essential to the supply of sufficient water and nutrients to ensure u successt'ul crop. By understanding the growth and distribution of sugarcane roots. yields can be optiniiscd through improved strategic decisions. 'This paper addresses root growth and rclationships to above ground biomass. lssues discussed i...

First attempts for the estimation of above ground forest biomass (AGB) by means of SAR, have used allometric equations to calculate biomass from the estimated PolInSAR forest height. However, changes in forest density or structure bias the known allometric relations. Today, remote sensing systems like SAR are able to measure additional parameters like vertical forest structure [1] [2]. In this ...
