The role of macrophages in intestinal amoebiasis in mice has been investigated. The effect of injuring host macrophages on the course of infection was examined by using strains selected as being either genetically susceptible (C3H/HeJ, C57BL/6) or genetically resistant (A/J) to amoebiasis. Mice were treated with an intravenous injection of silica particles 1 day before infection with 2.5 X 10(5...
To correlate a particular state of immunity with Entamoeba spp., we used colorimetric PCR to differentiate E. histolytica from E. dispar in individuals with amoebiasis and to associate its presence with the clinical profile, including humoral and cellular immune responses to E. histolytica. Our results showed high levels of antibody in acute amoebiasis and elevation of IL-4 production, a cytoki...

The clinical presentation of amoebic colitis are diverse. Amoebiasis is comparatively rare in the U.K. and, unless the clinician is aware of the condition, wrong diagnosis often leads to delay in appropriate treatment resulting in high mortality. Diagnosis rests on clinical suspicion, stool examination, sigmoidoscopy with rectal biopsy and serological tests. Amoebiasis is readily treatable and ...
Amoebiasis is an uncommon disease in developed countries. Its clinical presentation can be variable and non-specific, and the diagnosis can be easily overlooked. We report a case of colonic amoebic abscess mimicking advanced colonic cancer with acute intestinal obstruction and liver metastasis. The presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of amoebiasis are also reviewed.
In this case report we present a family cluster of amoebiasis in nonendemic region. A 46-year-old women, diagnosed with Crohn’s disease for which she received no maintenance therapy, was evaluated the suspicion flare. At colonoscopy however, atypical findings were seen. Histopathologic examination revealed micro-organisms compatible amoebiasis. Interestingly, 4 years before event started new re...
AIMS To develop a rapid latex agglutination screening test for invasive amoebiasis. METHODS The performance of an in-house latex agglutination test was compared with three standard serological techniques--the immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT), the indirect haemagglutination test (IHA), and the cellulose acetate precipitin (CAP) test. Forty six sera were screened; 12 from negative control...
