Size selectivity of fyke nets for European eels Anguilla anguilla was investigated by reviewing the results of published experimental studies. A general size selectivity model was then derived that can be easily incorporated into demographic models to simulate population dynamics, assess and monitor abundance and length structure of eel stocks and forecast the consequences of different manageme...
We report here the complete genome sequence of a virus isolated from a diseased marbled eel (Anguilla marmorata) in Taiwan. The virus has been characterized as being related to Japanese eel endothelial cell-infecting virus (JEECV), with a large T-antigen-like protein. The sequence of the marbled eel virus displays low homology to the JEECV.
The introduced parasite Anguillicoloides crassus is thought to play an important role in the decline of freshwater eel (Anguilla spp.) populations. These nematodes are known to negatively affect many fitness-related traits in eels. We used experimental infections to study the effect of A. crassus on the relative size or mass of organs, and the expression of functionally relevant genes (total of...
The spatial expression pattern of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) mRNA in the brain of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) was determined using non-radioactive in situ hybridization, and mapped and compared to that of other vertebrates. Riboprobes were prepared based on a partial cDNA coding sequence for A. anguilla BDNF that was amplified using degenerate primers, cloned and sequence...
Anguilliform or eel-like fishes are typically bottom dwellers, some of which are specialized burrowers. Although specializations for burrowing are predicted to affect the kinematics of swimming, it remains unknown to what extent this is actually the case. Here we examine swimming kinematics and efficiency of two burrowing anguilliform species, Pisodonophis boro and Heteroconger hassi, with diff...
A novel picornavirus was isolated from specimens of a diseased European eel (Anguilla anguilla). This virus induced a cytopathic effect in eel embryonic kidney cells and high mortality in a controlled transmission study using elvers. Eel picornavirus has a genome of 7,496 nucleotides that encodes a polyprotein of 2,259 amino acids. It has a typical picornavirus genome layout, but its low simila...
Nephroblastomas were observed in 50 Japanese eel reared at a farm for 5 to 9 months from 1989 after collection in the wild. The tumors, arising from the trunk kidney near the anus, were noted externally as abdominal swellings and varied in size from 30 to 75 mm in maximum diameter. Most were elastic, solid, and well encapsulated. Histologically, the nephroblastomas were composed of combinations...
A survey of restriction site polymorphism in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of the American eel Anguilla rostrata showed no genetic divergence among samples from a 4000-km stretch of North America coastline. Lack of geographic differentiation in mtDNA over such a large area contrasts sharply with results for terrestrial and freshwater vertebrates and is most likely attributable to the extraordin...
