AIM To report five children with horizontal jerk nystagmus in whom eye movement recordings in the dark revealed a spontaneous reversal in the direction of the nystagmus beat. Three patients were blind in one eye and were diagnosed as having a manifest latent nystagmus (MLN), and two patients had strabismus and congenital nystagmus (CN). METHODS Eye movements were recorded using DC electro-ocu...

To determine the prognostic value of myoclonic jerk in children with enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection, a retrospective study was conducted on 665 enterovirus culture-confirmed patients admitted to Chang Gung Children's Hospital from January 2000 to September 2001. The mean age was 35.0 months +/- 32.2 months, ranging from 1 day to 15 years and 416 (62.6%) of them were male. Among these patients,...

Tendon jerk (TJ) is one of the most commonly used clinical tests in differential diagnosis of human motor disorders. There remains some ambiguity in the physiological interpretation of the test, especially with respect to its association to the functional status of patients. The TJ test inputs a non-physiological stimuli, but it is unclear to what degree the kinematics generated during the TJ t...

This paper proposes a novel control law for accurate tracking of agile trajectories using tailsitter flying wing unmanned aerial vehicle that transitions between vertical takeoff and landing forward flight. The global formulation enables maneuvering throughout the flight envelope, including uncoordinated with sideslip. Differential flatness nonlinear dynamics simplified aerodynamics model is sh...

The turtle papilla neglecta (PN) is a small organ lying in the ventrolateral utricular wall between the posterior crista (PC) and the utriculosaccular foramen. Innervated by a branch of the posterior ampullary nerve, the organ is covered by a cupula extending only a small distance into the endolymphatic space. Although most rotation-sensitive units in the posterior division of the eighth nerve ...

Autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that can execute aggressive (i.e., high-speed and high-acceleration) maneuvers have attracted significant attention in the past few years. This article focuses on accurate tracking of quadcopter trajectories. We propose a novel control law for position yaw angle their derivatives up to fourth order, specifically velocity, acceleration, jerk, snap along...

This paper derives a jerk-shaped profile to address the vibration reduction of underdamped flexible dynamics of motion system. The jerk-limited profile is a widespread smooth command pattern used by modern motion systems. The ability of the jerk-limited profile to cancel the residual vibration of an undamped flexible mode is clearly explained using an equivalent continuous filter representation...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of Comprehensive Hand Repetitive Intensive Strength Training (CHRIST) on upper limb function in children with cerebral palsy using motion analysis. METHOD The subjects in this study included 19 children (10 males, 9 females, mean age=8.8 years) with cerebral palsy. The experimental group (n=10) received CHRIST and general rehabilitation therapy. The control...

Two cases are described in which inversion of the quadriceps jerk was observed. It is suggested that the finding of an inverted quadriceps jerk is evidence of a spinal cord lesion at 12, 3, 4 segmental level and has for the lumbar cord the same localising value as the inverted supinator jerk for the cervical cord.

This paper addresses the problem of designing jerk limited timeoptimal control profiles for rest-to-rest maneuvers of flexible structures. The variation of the structure of the jerk profile as a function of the permissible jerk is studied. An optimal control problem is formulated which includes constraints to cancel the poles corresponding to the rigid body and flexible modes of the system and ...
