Experiments were done to determine whether the strength of reciprocal inhibition from ankle flexors to extensors can be controlled independently of the level of ongoing motor activity in a task-dependent manner. In this paper we use the term reciprocal inhibition in the functional sense--inhibition of the antagonist(s) during activity of the agonist(s)--without reference to specific neural path...

In order to learn more about stretch reflex behaviour of triceps surae, normal human subjects sat in a chair with one foot on a platform attached to a torque motor that produced phasic dorsiflexion displacements on the ankle. EMG activity was recorded from triceps surae and responses were obtained for various conditions. When the subjects's foot was relaxed, stretch of triceps surae produced a ...

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of muscle fatigue on ankle joint moment and center of pressure during single-leg stance, perturbed by forward or backward platform perturbations.   Methods : In this semi-experimental study fatigue induced to knee muscles by using an ergometer (monark). Surface elecromyographic signals were recorded from knee muscles during maxim...

BACKGROUND Arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI) is a continuing reflex reaction of the musculature surrounding a joint after distension or damage to the structures of that joint. This phenomenon has been well documented after knee joint injury and has been generalised to occur at other joints of the human body, yet minimal research has been conducted in this regard. The response of the muscles c...

Chronic lateral ankle instability (CAI) is defined as the occurrence of recurrent bouts instability. Clinical examination should be supplemented by a complete, directed imaging assessment. Imaging occurred simple comparative AP and weight-bearing X-ray, stress X-rays, ultrasound, CT arthrography MRI. Arthroscopic classification chronic stable ankle, moderate instability, severe global Managemen...

abstract background: several studies have examined the reflex response of ankle musculature to sudden inversion in noninjured and injured subjects. to date, there have been no studies to determine the effect of versatile degrees & conditions of perturbation on the ankle musculature latency. the purpose of this study was to measure and determine whether there was a difference in ankle musculatur...

This study compared the intrinsic and reflex torques generated in response to position perturbations in tibialis anterior (TA) and gastrocnemius (GS) ankle muscles. Pulse, step, and a combination of random perturbation and step inputs were used to identify the reflex and intrinsic contributions to the measured torque. TA reflex torques were very small whereas GS reflex torques were substantial.

Stretch-sensitive afferent feedback from hip muscles has been shown to trigger long-lasting, multijoint reflex responses in people with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). These reflexes could have important implications for control of leg movements during functional activities, such as walking. Because the control of leg movement relies on reflex regulation at all joints of the limb, we sought t...

The relative contributions of intramuscular and extramuscular receptors to changes in the reflex excitability of soleus motoneurons, following muscle stretch, have been studied in man. It was found that reflex excitability was decreased by muscle stretch. The extent of the decrease was related to the amount of stretch, irrespective of whether the latter was produced by dorsiflexion of the ankle...

BACKGROUND Several prognostic factors exist influencing the outcome of surgical discectomy in the patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH). The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between severity of preoperative impaired ankle reflex and outcomes of lumbar discectomy in the patients with L5-S1 LDH. METHODS We retrospectively evaluated 181 patients (108 male and 73 female) who...
