A new nucleosidyl-peptide antibiotic, sansanmycin, was isolated from an unidentified Streptomyces sp SS. The structure of sansanmycin was elucidated by analyses of its alkaline hydrolysate and spectroscopic analyses. Sansanmycin exhibits antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Ra and Pseudomonas aeruginosa with MIC values of 10 and 12.5 mg/ml, respectively.

Tunicamycins are nucleotide sugar analogs produced by several Streptomyces species. In eukaryotes, tunicamycins inhibit UDP-N-acetylglucosamine: dolichol phosphate GlcNAc-1-P transferase (GPT) that catalyzes the first step in protein glycosylation. In bacteria they inhibit UDP-N-acetylmuramoyl-pentapeptide: undecaprenol phosphate MurNAc-pentapeptide-1-P transtransferase (MraY) that catalyzes an...

We examined the effects of halogens on the production of salinosporamide A (NPI-0052) by the obligate marine actinomycete Salinispora tropica NPS465, specifically the production of analogs containing halogens other than chlorine. Adding NaF, NaBr and NaI directly to the production medium prepared in seawater containing 3% NaCl did not induce the production of the corresponding analogs. Replacin...

Objectives: Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter spp. which are usually resistant to many antibiotics, are the most important infectious pathogens in intensive care units (ICUs). The aim of this study was to determine the antibiotic resistance patterns of these agents and to follow variation in resistance among the years of 1999, 2006 and 2009. Methods: The resistance rates of various antibiotics for ...

This investigation examined the effect of the anthracycline antitumor agents on reactive oxygen metabolism in rat heart. Oxygen radical production by doxorubicin, daunorubicin, and various anthracycline analogues was determined in heart homogenate, sarcoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, and cytosol, the major sites of cardiac damage by the anthracycline drugs. Superoxide production in heart sarc...
