We show high rates of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae carriage among the staff and children at an orphanage in Bamako, Mali. Enterobacteriaceae colonized in 100% and 63%, respectively, of the 38 children and 30 adults studied. Use of antimicrobial drugs appeared excessive and inappropriate; decontamination and hygiene protocols were also questioned.
BACKGROUND To determine the strategies of prevention of hospital-acquired pneumonia that reduce mortality in intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS We followed PRISMA (Preferred Reported Items for Systemic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. We searched MEDLINE and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (through 10 June 2014) as well as reference lists of articles. We included all randomized ...
BACKGROUND Despite standard manual decontamination, hospital equipment remains contaminated with microorganisms, contributing to nosocomial transmission and hospital acquired infections. This has the potential to negate the effects of healthcare workers' hand-washing protocols. In order to decrease the likelihood of equipment contamination, there has been a rise in the use of disposable pieces ...
INTRODUCTION Given the high morbidity and mortality attributable to ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in intensive care unit (ICU) patients, prevention plays a key role in the management of patients undergoing mechanical ventilation. One of the candidate preventive interventions is the selective decontamination of the digestive or respiratory tract (SDRD) by topical antiseptic or antimicrob...
Atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) is a non-thermal technology, effective against a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms. Inactivation efficacy results from plasma generated reactive species. These may interact with any organic components in a test matrix including the target microorganism, thus food components may exert a protective effect against the antimicrobial mode of action. The effect of ...
Zinc oxide (ZnO) has been used for many years in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, paint, textile, and food industries coating surfaces, absorbing UV rays due to its antimicrobial properties nanoscale it identified as important chemical decontamination. can be found foods well allowed daily intake adults reported 8-11 mg. Oxide Nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) are generally regarded safe (GRAS) being stable...
We investigated eyewear contamination levels in the operating room to assess infection risk and inform protocol development. Microbial contamination after use was found in 37.7% of disposable and 94.9% of reusable eyewear pieces. After disinfection, 74.4% of reusable eyewear also cultured positive. Disposable eyewear may reduce intercase contamination risk. Reusable eyewear may carry ongoing bi...
Introduction Emergence of carbapemenases and their worldwide distribution has worsens the clinical scenario of antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative bacteria. Selective Digestive Decontamination (SDD) has been used to prevent development of nosocomial colonization and infections in ICU patients. However, rectal colonization with multirresistant bacteria is a serious concern with SDD. An effect...
The influence of intestinal bacterial decontamination on the occurrence of grades II to IV acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) was retrospectively analyzed in 194 predominantly adult patients treated by genotypically identical sibling marrow transplantation under conditions of strict protective isolation and intestinal antimicrobial decontamination. Forty-five patients (23%) developed acute ...
