考古学分野において,土器の内面に白色物質が付着した報告が散見される.これまでに土器内面付着白色物を対象に行った蛍光X線分析,FTIR(Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy)分析及びX線回折によって,白色物は水酸化アルミニウムの結晶と同定した報告がある.ただし,その起源については明らかにはなっていない.今般,平城京跡出土の奈良時代須恵器内面に白色付着物が見られた事例があった.そこで土器の用途について解明することを目的に,土器内面の白色物について蛍光X線分析,FTIR分析,X線回折を行ったところ,水酸化アルミニウムの結晶の一種であるバイヤライトと同定した.土器付着白色物質の同定例としてバイヤライトが同定されることは珍しい.バイヤライトの成因は土器の使用用途に関連していると考えられるが,そこに外部環境が関与した可能性がある.これまでの知見と考え合わ...
