We consider a model for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) from high-velocity neutron stars in the galactic halo. In this model, bursters are born in the galactic disk with large recoil velocities Vr, and GRBs are beamed to within emission cones of half-angle φb centered on Vr. We describe scenarios for magnetically-channeled GRBs that have such beaming characteristics. We then make detailed comparisons o...

We show that the distribution of observed energies of GRB with known redshifts can be explained by the hypothesis of the standard energy release E 0 = 5×10 51 ergs. Two situations are possible, either the beaming angle differs from burst to burst, or there is a universal emssion diagram in each burst, the observed difference being due to different viewing angles.

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT Beaming of relativistic ejecta in GRBs has been postulated by many authors in order to reduce the total GRB energy, thus it is very important to look for the observational evidence of beaming. Rhoads (1999) has pointed out that the dynamics of the blast wave, which is formed when the beamed ejecta sweeping the external medium, will be significantly modified by...

We present the analytical solution of a maser shaped like a spherical shell. We determine the general condition on the size of the central cavity at which a sphere becomes a shell maser, and derive the intensity, beaming angle and observed size of both unsaturated and saturated shells.

The gamma-ray burst (GRB) efficiency of converting kinetic energy into γ-rays is a very important quantity, which can potentially confirm or rule out the commonly accepted internal-shocks model. Several authors have been estimate the efficiency from the afterglow and GRB emission. Recently, some authors imply the efficiency derived from the latest observations from swift with this method is ver...

Water maser polarization observations in the precessing jet of W43A have revealed that it is magnetically collimated. Here we present a detailed description of the physical properties of the water maser environment in the jet. We discuss the maser saturation level and beaming angle as well as the intrinsic temperatures and densities. Additionally, we show that the polarization angle of the stro...

Thanks to the availability of high-resolution high-sensitivity telescopes such as the Very Large Array, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, there is now a wealth of observational data on relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei (AGN) as well as galactic sources such as Black-Hole X-ray Binaries. Since the jet speeds cannot be constrained well from observations, b...

The energy requirements of gamma ray bursts have in past been poorly constrained because of three major uncertainties: The distances to bursts, the degree of burst beaming, and the efficiency of gamma ray production. The first of these has been resolved, with both indirect evidence (the distribution of bursts in flux and position) and direct evidence (redshifted absorption features in the after...

An approach for obtaining one-way transmission in the beaming regime is suggested that is based on the directional radiation of surface plasmons in nonsymmetric metallic gratings with a single slit. In contrast to the various nonsymmetric one-way diffraction gratings that have recently been proposed, the possibility of obtaining of narrow beams is demonstrated. Strong directional selectivity ca...
