Current biofuel production methods use engineered bacteria to break down cellulose and convert it to biofuel. A major challenge in microbial fuel production is that increasing biofuel yields can be limited by the toxicity of the biofuel to the organism that is producing it. Previous research has demonstrated that efflux pumps are effective at increasing tolerance to various biofuels. However, w...

a r t i c l e i n f o Keywords: Pd nanowires Nonenzymatic and enzymatic bioelectrocatalysis Glucose oxidase Biofuel cells Bioelectrocatalysis was demonstrated with palladium (Pd) nanowire array electrode via nonenzymatic and en-zymatic methods for glucose, which was validated by the generation of anodic current in the presence of glucose. The vertically standing Pd nanowires used for the fabric...

Research and development efforts for biofuel production are targeted at converting plant biomass into renewable liquid fuels. Major obstacles for biofuel production include lack of biofuel crop domestication, low oil yields from crop plants as well as recalcitrance of lignocellulose to chemical and enzymatic breakdown. Researchers are expanding the genetic and genomic resources available for cr...

Current biofuel production methods use engineered bacteria to break down cellulose and convert it to biofuel. However, this production is limited by the toxicity of the biofuel to the organism that is producing it. Therefore, to increase yields, microbial biofuel tolerance must be increased. Tolerant strains of bacteria use a wide range of mechanisms to counteract the detrimental effects of tox...

This review considers the literature published since 1994 on microbial and enzymatic biofuel cells. Types of biofuel cell are classified according to the nature of the electrode reaction and the nature of the biochemical reactions. The performance of fuel cells is critically reviewed and a variety of possible applications is considered. The current direction of development of biofuel cells is c...

Enzyme-based biofuel cells possess several positive attributes for energy conversion, including renewable catalysts, flexibility of fuels (including renewables), and the ability to operate at room temperature. However, enzyme-based biofuel cells remain limited by short lifetimes, low power densities and inefficient oxidation of fuels. Recent advances in biofuel cell technology have addressed th...

Poly-5,2':5',2''-terthiophen-3'-carboxylic acid (polyTTCA) and poly-Fe(III)-[N,N'-bis[4-(5,2':5',2''-terthien-3'-yl)salicyliden]-1,2-ethanediamine] (polyFeTSED) were synthesized and electrochemically polymerized on an Au surface for use as mediators and catalysts for a biofuel cell. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of (a) the TTCA homopolymer (polyTTCA) and (b) the TTCA-FeTSED copolymer...

We demonstrate a flexible paper-based biofuel cell using porous carbon inks for high power output. The power density of the fabricated biofuel cell reached 0.12 mW cm(-2) (at 0.4 V), which is the highest output power reported to date, to the best of our knowledge.
