The study of the biological effects of ionizing radiation started practically at the same time as the discovery of X-rays in 1895. Since the techniques and methods accepted today to quantify radiation dose were absent at that time, first findings and studies were barely qualitative. Nonetheless, harmful effects to man and to laboratory animal species from ionizing radiation were already observe...
mobile phone use and wireless communication technology have grown explosively over the past decades. this rapid growth has caused widespread global concern about the potential detrimental effects of this technology on human health. stem cells generate specialized cell types of the tissue in which they reside through normal differentiation pathways. considering the undeniable importance of stem ...
The radiation exposure in space missions can be reduced by appropriate measures, but it cannot be prevented. The reason is that space radiations due to their high energy deeply penetrates in matter. In comparison to the shielding thickness of the atmosphere of approximately 10 meter water equivalent, a spacecraft provides only 1-30 cm shielding depending on the equipment installed inside the sp...
Many of our students seem to have well-defined but not necessarily well-founded opinions on the biological effects of ionizing radiation. During discussions of nuclear transformations in introductory chemistry and physics courses we might be able to help these students better understand the magnitude of these effects, and perhaps sort out the plethora of units with which radiation measurements ...

This work presents the effects of low-LET radiations (electrons) on normal and modified cells DNA. The radiation-induced effects are assessed using the COMETassay. The results show that modified cells are more sensible to exposure than the normal ones. The dose-effect relationship follows a linear-no-threshold model suggested by BEIR VII.
