Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) monitoring and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were combined to evaluate the defects created by an ionic liquid anion and a cation in a supported phospholipid bilayer composed of zwitterionic lipids on a silica surface. The cation 1-octyl-3-methyl imidazolium (OMIM(+)) was shown to remove lipids from the bilayer, increase the roughness to appro...

In this work, two new redox-active ionic liquids, one based on 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxide and the other 4,4?-bipyridine, are synthesized characterized. A ferrocene-based liquid is used for referencing results. All liquids formed via salt-metathesis from halogenate to bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. Their fundamental thermal characteristics assessed with differential scanning calor...

We have prepared novel divalent ionic liquids based on the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion where two charged imidazolium groups in cations are either directly bound to each other or linked by a single atom.

The excited-state dynamics of 4-thiothymidine in the ionic liquid, 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide, is revealed. Branching of the initial excited-state population results in efficient intersystem crossing to the triplet manifold with a rate constant of 1.6 x 10(12) s(-1) and close to unity triplet yield after UVA excitation at 340 or 360 nm.

Ionic liquid 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([BnMIm][NTf2]) can promote the generation of the ˙OOH free radical and thereby efficiently transformed the β-O-4 lignin model compound 2-phenoxyacetophenone into benzoic acid and phenol using O2 as the oxidant. Furthermore, the IL-based metal-free catalytic system can also depolymerize other lignin model compounds and ...

The reactive interaction of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [BMP][TFSA] with Cu(111) was investigated by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions. Decomposition between 300 K and 350 K is manifested by changes in the surface structure monitored with STM. XPS reveals th...

The room-temperature ionic liquid EmimNTf2 (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide) was studied with two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectroscopy and polarization selective pump-probe (PSPP) experiments using low-concentration selenocyanate (SeCN(-)) as the vibrational probe. SeCN(-) was added as EmimSeCN, which keeps the cation the same. KSeCN was also used, so K(+) was...

Reflection high-energy electron diffraction is presented as a contactless, surface-specific method to probe the ion organization and layering at the ionic liquid-solid interfaces. Three regimes can be identified for the structure of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([EMIM][Tf2N]) on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite, which is strongly dependent on the distances of ...

This work deals with the determination, using equilibrium and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics, of the viscosity of an ionic liquid: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([emim][Tf2N]). A first method consists in computing the shear viscosity using the Green-Kubo formalism from the pressure tensor correlation function obtained from equilibrium simulations. On the other...
