A 31-year-old woman had intracerebral and intraventricular hemorrhage from an arteriovenous malformation. Vasospasm of the internal carotid arteries developed and was treated with angioplasty. On initial CT scans, only traces of blood were seen in the basal cisterns; thus, the development of symptomatic vasospasm was an unexpected complication.

This paper describes the application of using a submersible remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to map and explore underground water cisterns during a series of expeditions to Malta and Gozo. The purpose of this project was to create maps of ancient cisterns located under private homes, churches, and fortresses where passageways leading to the cisterns are too narrow and dangerous for humans to ent...

The structure of membranes at junctions between the plasma membrane and underlying cisterns of endoplasmic reticulum in amphioxus muscle and mouse cerebellar neurons was studied using the freeze-fracture technique. In amphioxus muscle, subsurface cisterns of sarcoplasmic reticulum form junctions with the surface membrane at the level of the sarcomere I bands. On the protoplasmic leaflet of the ...

Papilloedema is not always an adequate predictor of potential complications from lumbar puncture, and many clinicians are using computed tomography (CT) before lumbar puncture in an effort to identify more accurately the "at risk" patient. This paper identifies the following anatomical criteria defined by CT scanning that correlate with unequal pressures between intracranial compartments and pr...

Abstract The incidence of perimesencephalic subarachnoid hemorrhage (PMSAH) is rare, 0.5 in 100,000 adults. It comprises 5 to 10% all SAHs and approximately 33% nonaneurysmal SAH. Quadrigeminal SAH a variant (PMNASAH) that not well described the literature. may comprise up one-fifth PMNASAH cases carries similar benign prognosis. This PMSAH characterized by blood centered quadrigeminal cistern ...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Postmortem imaging with CT or MR is emerging as an effective technique to augment forensic autopsy. Expected findings on postmortem imaging of the brain may mimic pathologic processes in the living brain, leading to potential misdiagnosis. The purpose of this study is to describe the array of CT findings that can be expected to be present within the brain after death. M...

We present a case of oculomotor palsy due to hypertensive hemorrhage in the caudate nucleus, with intraventricular extension. To our knowledge, this is the only instance of this complication occurring due to hypertensive hemorrhage. Our patient initially developed headache at the time of her hemorrhage; 8 days later, she developed complete third nerve palsy, which showed improvement at follow-u...

Symptomatic hydrocephalus after subarachnoid haemorrhage seems to result both from mechanical obstruction of arachnoid villi and basilar cisterns and from an inflammatory cellular reaction in the villi. Subarachnoid haemorrhage was induced in rabbits using whole blood injected through an implanted intraventricular needle. Control rabbits receiving intraventricular methyl prednisolone acetate bu...

The authors observed flow-void in a shunt tube in the basal cisterns of a 28-year-old man who had previously undergone surgery for a craniopharyngioma. They describe the appearance of a subarachnoid shunt catheter in the basal cisterns to caution against misinterpreting it as an aberrant vessel.

A case of spontaneous intracranial hypotension syndrome is described. Computed tomography showed slit ventricles with tight basal cisterns. Prompt improvement of symptoms was achieved by intramuscular dexamethasone treatment. A follow-up CT scan demonstrated re-expansion of ventricles and basal cisterns.
