Here, we describe the draft genome sequence of Microbacterium sp. strain Alg239_V18, an actinobacterium retrieved from the marine sponge Spongia sp. Genome annotation revealed a vast gene repertoire involved in antibiotic and heavy metal-resistance, and a versatile carbohydrate assimilation metabolism with potential for chitin utilization.

Methods Microbiological data during year 2006-2010 of Ramathibodi Hospital, a 900-bed Thai-University hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, were retrospective analysed. All bacterial isolates were identified by conventional biochemical tests as recommended in Manual of Clinical Microbiology. Candida species were identified according to characteristics of chlamydoconidia production and carbohydrate ass...

The pea chloroplastic fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase) antisense construct reduced the endogenous level of expression of the corresponding Arabidopsis thaliana gene. The reduction of foliar FBPase activity in the transformants T(2) and T(3) generation ranged from 20% to 42%, and correlated with lower levels of FBPase protein. FBPase antisense plants displayed different phenotypes with a cle...

In the preceding paper (Siegel and Clifton, 1950) on the oxidative assimilation of carbohydrates by Escherichia coli considerations of growth, assimilation, and energetics made it evident that free energy relationships alone do not provide conclusive criteria concerning the extent of the assimilability of a carbohydrate utilized by the cell. This has been attributed to the more important role o...

In a previous study of the synthesis of cellular carbohydrate during fermentation by D.C.L. baker's yeast (Trevelyan, Gammon, Wiggins & Harrison, 1952) little variation was found in the trichloroacetic acid-soluble carbohydrate, of which the main constituent is trehalose (Trevelyan & Harrison, 1952). The low concentration of glucose in the medium used, about 5 mm, was thought to have restricted...

OBJECTIVE To determine if D-xylose (XYL) and/or α-methyl-D-glucoside (MDG) assimilation can be used reliably as a rapid test to differentiate Candida dubliniensis from Candida albicans at an earlier time point such as 2 h after inoculation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty isolates of C. albicans and C. dubliniensis recovered from anatomical sites and clinical specimens were used. Isolates were i...

A key concept underpinning current understanding of the carbon/nitrogen (C/N) interaction in plants is that the capacity for N assimilation is aligned to nutrient availability and requirements by the integrated perception of signals from hormones, nitrate, sugars, organic acids, and amino acids. Studies on the nature and integration of these signals over the last ten years has revealed a comple...
