Two Carthamus tinctorius varieties (Jawhara and 104) were studied in order to investigate their natural dyes contents and biological activities. Obtained results showed that quinochalcone contents and antioxidant activities varied considerably as function of flowering stages. So flowers at fructification stage contained the highest carthamin content with the strongest antioxidant capacity with ...
Pigments extracted from natural products are widely used for food coloration in Japan. An investigation concerning the photo-mutagenicity and photo-carcinogenicity of frequently used colorants in Japan was performed. Colorants examined were from Laccifer lacca (lac-color), Coccus cacti (cochineal-color), Carthamus tinctorius (carthamus yellow), Gardenia augusta (gardenia yellow and gardenia blu...
South Asian Regions including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are very rich in medicinal plants and have about 10% of world’s plant diversity. The traditional systems of medicine have deep penetration in this region. A large proportion of the society here, purely or largely have to depend on these systems. The reason behind is the effectiveness of these traditional healing systems or is the soci...
Purpose: To explore the effects of Carthamus tinctorius L. extract (CTLE) on diethylnitrosamine (DEN)induced liver cirrhosis in rats. Methods: CTLE was obtained by extracting the dried Carthamus tinctorius L. in water. Liver cirrhosis was induced by injecting the rats with DEN once a week for 8 weeks. Following this treatment, clinical biochemical assessments, as well as oxidative stress test a...
The dye used on the silk textiles in an as yet undated relic shrine in a church in Antwerp was analysed by reflectance UV-Vis spectrometry. The natural dyestuff carthamin from safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) was detected; because of its very poor light fastness this does not allow the shrine to be exhibited. Neither does it allow dating of the silk, since safflower has been used over a period ...
The anti-inflammatory activity of four total extracts, their fractions and two main constituents (alpha-bisabolol beta-D-fucopyranoside and luteolin 7-O-glucoside) of Carthamus lanatus L. aerial parts, were assessed in vitro by determining the inhibitory effects on induced human neutrophils. The dichloromethane extract and its water-alcoholic part exhibited the most significant inhibitory effects.
The aim of this study is the improvement of the photostability of several natural anionic dyes, carmine (CM), carthamus yellow (CY), and annatto dye (ANA), by complexation with hydrotalcite. The composite of the dyes and hydrotalcite is prepared by the coprecipitation method. CM is successfully intercalated in the hydrotalcite layer when the amount of introduced CM is large. The photostability ...
Microsomal preparations from the developing cotyledons of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) catalyse the acylation of sn-glycerol 3-phosphate in the presence of acyl-CoA. Under these conditions the radioactive glycerol in sn-glycerol 3-phosphate accumulates in phosphatidic acid, phosphatidylcholine, diacyl- and tri-acylglycerol. The incorporation of glycerol into phosphatidylcholine is via diacy...
