We report a case of fracture of the cricoid cartilage associated with cricoid pressure during rapid sequence tracheal intubation in a patient with status asthmaticus. This patient had a history of laryngeal trauma 48 yr previously. Fracture of the cricoid cartilage has not been reported previously after cricoid pressure.

The objective of this study was to investigate the expression of the chemokine CXCL10 and its role in joint tissues following articular fracture. We hypothesized that CXCL10 is upregulated following articular fracture and contributes to cartilage degradation associated with post-traumatic arthritis (PTA). To evaluate CXCL10 expression following articular fracture, gene expression was quantified...

Two Types of Fracture There' are roughly two main types of fracture of the waist of the carpal scaphoid. In type I there is a crack in the bone with negligible or no displacement, whilst in type II fractures there is an appreciable gap and some degree of displacement. The prognosis is best in type I and frequently the cartilage over the fracture line is intact. McLaughlin (1954) decided to trea...

A retrospective study of 23 acetabular fractures in patients up to 17 years of age is presented, with an average follow-up of eight years. Good or excellent functional results were achieved in 21 patients; radiographic results were good or excellent in 16. Conservative treatment gave consistently good results in fractures with minimal initial displacement, stable posterior fracture-dislocations...

This study evaluated complications associated with implant depth in headless compression screw treatment of an osteochondral fracture associated with a traumatic patellar dislocation in a 21-year-old woman. Computed tomography and X-rays showed one lateral fracture fragment measuring 25 × 16 mm. Osteosynthesis was performed with two headless compression screws. Five months later, the screws wer...

Experimental injuries of cartilage and bone were produced by applying shear force to the articular surfaces of the lateral femoral condyles of six-month-old pigs under various loading conditions. The lesions were divided into two groups, 'open' or 'closed', depending on the presence of a crack on the articular surface. Each was further divided into four types according to the depth of penetrati...

The aim of this study is to clarify the effect of low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on shortening of the fracture healing period and endochondral ossification during the fracture healing process. We first established a model of aging-related delayed union fractures consisting of aged mouse (C57BL/6J; 40 weeks old) with closed femur fractures. We compared the healing process of 40-week-old...

Fracture healing in diabetic individuals and in animal models of diabetes is impaired. To investigate mechanisms by which diabetes may affect fracture healing we focused on the transition from cartilage to bone, a midpoint in the fracture healing process. Femoral fractures were induced in mice rendered diabetic by multiple low dose streptozotocin treatment and compared to matching normoglycemic...

carpal chip fractures are common causes of lameness in racehorses. due to disadvantages in surgical management, adjuvant treatment modalities are usually necessary. adipose-derived stem cells (adscs) have the potential to differentiate into other cell types including bone and cartilage cells. adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction (svf) is produced during adscs isolation from adipose tissue....

Mechanical overload leads to a common arthrosis in the metacarpal condyle of the fetlock joint of racehorses. This is usually asymptomatic but severe forms can cause lameness. Subchondral bone failure is often present and the predictability of the site provided an opportunity to study of the progression of bone failure from microcracks to actual collapse of subchondral bone. Twenty-five fetlock...
