The use of Cefoxitin MIC test has not been recommended by the CLSI-AST, but its performance was equivalent to Cefoxitin DD when using modiÞ ed breakpoints of less than or equal to 4 μg/ml for susceptible and greater than orequal to 8 μg/ml for resistance. The results of Cefoxitin DD method were better for isolates with Oxacillin MIC between 4-6 μg/ml (Table). Both Oxacillin DD and Cefoxitin DD ...

Tests with 2,713 bacterial isolates (members of the family Enterobacteriaceae and gram-positive cocci) from 14 laboratories compared cefoxitin MICs with cefotetan MICs. Strains that were susceptible to cefoxitin could be assumed to be susceptible to cefotetan. Over half of the cefoxitin-resistant isolates of the Enterobacteriaceae were susceptible to cefotetan.

The pharmacokinetic disposition of 2 g of cefoxitin administered intravenously over 30 min was determined in six patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis for chronic renal failure. During the 6-h dialysate dwell time after the drug infusion, the mean apparent volume of distribution for cefoxitin was 0.267 liter/kg (range, 0.201 to 0.325 liter/kg), and the mean elimination t...

Cefoperazone and cefoxitin concentrations were determined in serum and pelvic tissue samples obtained at various intervals after a 2-g intramuscular dose. These levels were determined in 59 women scheduled for elective abdominal hysterectomy. Concentrations were measured by a new high-pressure liquid chromatography method which correlated with the microbiological assay. The mean times (+/- stan...

The beta-lactamase stability and inhibitory activity of 1-oxa cephalosporin, (6R,7R)-7-[[carboxy(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetyl]amino]-7-methoxy-3-[[(1-methyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl)thio]methyl]-8-oxo-5-oxa-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid, was investigated and compared to that of cefoxitin and cefotaxime. There was no detectable beta-lactamase hydrolysis of 1-oxa cephalosporin, cefotaxime and ...

Cefoxitin could be an alternative to carbapenems in extended-spectrum-beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-EC) infections. However, pharmacological and clinical data regarding cefoxitin are limited. Using a recent pharmacological model and the MICs of ESBL-EC collected from pyelonephritis, we determined the probabilities to reach four pharmacological targets: free cefoxitin concentra...

Cefoxitin is a new, cephalosporin-like antibiotic which is highly resistant to hydrolysis by beta-lactamase. Ninety-one cultures were selected either for their general resistance to cephalosporin antibiotics or for their ability to produce beta-lactamase. Some of these cultures were resistant to cefoxitin. The capacity of each of the 91 strains to hydrolyze cefoxitin with beta-lactamase was det...

The objective of this double-blind study was to compare the efficacy and safety of piperacillin with that of cefoxitin in patients with bacterial infections. Seventy hospitalized patients were treated with intravenous piperacillin (18 g/day) or cefoxitin (12 g/day) for a mean period of 11.5 days. Multiple serious underlying conditions were present in 91% of the patients in both treatment groups...

In severe appendicitis, the effect of a single intravenous dose of metronidazole (500 mg) was compared with cefoxitin (1 g). The antibiotics were given by random allocation once the diagnosis had been established at operation. In the metronidazole group, 5 out of 48 patients developed a wound infection whilst in hospital compared with 13 out of 48 in the cefoxitin group (P=0-036). However, 57% ...

Serum creatinine and creatinine clearance were measured in 10 healthy volunteers before and after an intravenous injection of 2 g cefoxitin sodium. Results were compared with in vitro work which demonstrated a positive interference by cefoxitin in the Jaffé reaction, the routine laboratory method of creatinine measurement. The serum creatinine estimation should be delayed until at least 2 hours...
