BACKGROUND The management of contralateral bullae incidentally found in radiological studies is controversial, largely due to the unpredictability of the natural course of incidentally found contralateral bullae. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with the contralateral occurrence of primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP), and to characterize the outcomes of contralateral bulla...

Pemphigus vulgaris is an autoimmune bullous dermatosis presenting with flaccid blisters and erosions. The morphology of pemphigus reflects the more superficial intraepidermal level split seen histologically in contrast pemphigoid, where deep below epidermis. Giant lung bullae have a large impact on respiratory mechanics1,2 and make ventilator management difficult in patients undergoing mechanical ventilation. The pathogenesis of lung bullae is varied. COPD-related emphysematous bullae are the most common type of lung bullae, whereas ventilator-associated lung bullae are rare. Treatment considerations include therapy for underlying disease, ventilat...

Forty-six patients with bullous emphysema were operated on. Respiratory function was investigated before and immediately after surgery, and during the follow-up to five years. The larger the volume of the bullae, the less disturbances of lung function caused by their removal immediately after operation. Respiratory function improved significantly during the long-term follow-up after removal of ...

OBJECTIVE The main cause of primary spontaneous pneumothorax is the rupture of subpleural blebs or bullae. The presence of bullae may also lead to an increased risk of recurrence. The best way to detect them is by means of computed tomography (CT). Our objective in the present study was to determine whether bullae detected by CT represent an increased risk of recurrence after a first episode of...

Bullosis diabeticorum (bullous disease of diabetes or diabetic bullae) is a noninflammatory, blistering disease occurring spontaneously in diabetic patients. The bullae are usually located on acral skin surfaces, particularly the feet. While this disease is unique to patients with diabetes, it may mimic other blistering disorders. This article reviews a case of a 75-year-old Hispanic male with t...

The cases of three sisters who presented with spontaneous pneumothoraces are described. In two of the patients large bullae were clearly demonstrable. No recognisable associations of bullae or pneumothorax were present and there was no evidence of generalised emphysema. The cases suggest a familial predisposition to the development of bullae in otherwise apparently healthy lungs.

In a previous publication (Ogilvie, 1959) an account was given of the functional disturbance in emphysematous patients without radiologically visible bullae. The purpose of this second paper is to describe the patterns of pulmonary dysfunction in 14 patients with pulmonary bullae and to compare these with the patterns observed in emphysematous patients without bullae. These patients were unsele...
