The species of Pleurotus have great commercial importance and adaptability for growth and fructification within a wide variety of agro-industrial lignocellulosic wastes. In this study, two substrates prepared from ground corncobs supplemented with rice bran and charcoal were tested for mycelium growth kinetics in test tubes and for the cultivation of four Pleurotus commercial isolates in polypr...
The survival of four aerobic and four anaerobic pathogens was evaluated quantitatively on cotton swabs and calcium alginate swabs stored in dry tubes as compared with swabs stored in Amies Transport Medium without charcoal. Survival of the pathogens was markedly improved when stored in Amies Transport Medium, although there was considerable loss of viability after a few hours of storage.
Adsorbent tube samples are collected by drawing workplace air through either coconut shell charcoal or Anasorb 747 tubes with personal sampling pumps. Diffusive samples are collected by exposing either 3M 3520 Organic Vapor Monitors (OVMs) or SKC 575-002 Passive Samplers to workplace air. Samples are desorbed with 60/40 (v/v) N,N-dimethylformamide/carbon disulfide (DMF/CS2) and analyzed by gas ...
For centuries, activated Charcoal (AC) has been used externally in a poultice form to adsorb “poisons” trapped in the outer layers of skin and internally to relieve intestinal discomfort and to remove toxic materials. The largest use for activated charcoal, in our society, is as a filter bed in air and water remediation cartridges. Recently, scientists have formulated AC into a nonstick dermal ...
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) were reported to have record high hydrogen storage capacities at room temperature, indicating an interaction between hydrogen and carbon matrix that is stronger than known before. Here we present a study of the interaction of hydrogen with activated charcoal, carbon nanofibers, and SWNT that disproves these earlier reports. The hydrogen storage capacity of ...
The use of a direct reading photoionization detector (PID) to determine short-term solvent exposures is described in the present paper. To assess the relevance of such a total exposure evaluation it was necessary to compare it with the real concentration of pollutants. This comparison was made by measuring in parallel with the PID determination the concentration of each pollutant using a standa...
The use of disposable polystyrene tubes for radioimmunoassay is now widespread. Washing out such tubes before disposal is tedious and time-consuming, especially if they contain dense charcoal or doubleantibody pellets. In this laboratory the simple device described below has much reduced the time and tedium involved in this task. It was constructed in a frew minutes for a cost of a few pence. *...
