Comparison between the results of strain and temperature dependent center Bragg wavelength shift have been accomplished using different apodization profiles to produce linearly chirped apodized far off resonance fiber Bragg gratings for the design of an optimum Dispersion compensator. The chirping is made using the ultraviolet (UV) phase mask method.

Group delay ripples less than 3 ps in amplitude were measured in chirped fiber Bragg gratings used as gain flattening filters. The delay ripples of cascaded filters increase as the square root of their number.

The reflectance spectra of chirped fiber Bragg gratings can depend substantially on the direction from which the measurement is taken. The measured difference between forward and backward reflectance spectra measured in a linearly chirped grating was shown to be due to the measured excess loss. Simulation using the popular transfer-matrix model demonstrated that the observed asymmetric behavior...

This paper discusses the importance of stress-induced contributions to the photo-induced birefringence observed in fiber Bragg gratings. Optical tomography measurements are performed in exposed and unexposed fibers to extract the stress profiles induced by UV-writing of fiber Bragg gratings for various exposure levels. A photoelastic analysis and a high-order isoparametric finite elements metho...

It is well known that chirped (aperiodic) refractiveindex Bragg gratings can be used for compensating for the dispersion of optical fiber waveguides.' When used in reflection mode (in contrast to transmission mode), such Bragg gratings exhibit large dispersion. As well, the sign of the dispersion in reflection mode is easily controlled. Together these two characteristics suggest the use of chir...

A modified coupled-mode (CM) model is proposed for the optical behavior of thermally chirped Bragg gratings. The model accounts for the axial gradient in the modulation wavenumber, which has been ignored in the classical CM model. The model is used to characterize the optical behavior of a polymethyl methacrylate-based polymer Bragg grating subjected to nonisothermal conditions. The validity of...

A wideband chirped fiber Bragg grating (FBG) dispersion compensator operating in C band is designed theoretically by numerically solving the coupled mode equations. The power reflectivity spectrum and dispersion characteristics of the chirped fiber Bragg gratings are analysed. In order to achieve wideband dispersion compensation with a low insertion loss, grating length, average refractive inde...

We propose and analyze a new type of a resonator in an annular geometry that is based on a single defect surrounded by radial Bragg reflectors on both sides. We show that the conditions for efficient mode confinement are different from those of the conventional Bragg waveguiding in a rectangular geometry. A simple and intuitive approach to the design of optimal radial Bragg reflectors is propos...

We have developed a theory that unifies the analysis of the modal properties of surface-emitting chirped circular grating lasers. This theory is based on solving the resonance conditions which involve two types of reflectivities of chirped circular gratings. This approach is shown to be in agreement with previous derivations which use the characteristic equations. Utilizing this unified analysi...

A fiber chirped pulse amplification system at 1558 nm was demonstrated using a large-aperture volume Bragg grating stretcher and compressor made of Photo-Thermal-Refractive (PTR) glass. Such PTR glass based gratings represent a new type of pulse stretching and compressing devices which are compact, monolithic and optically efficient. Furthermore, since PTR glass technology enables volume gratin...
