Introduction & Objective: Candida species can cause opportunistic infections in human. Although Candida albicans is major pathogenic species, non-albicans species of Candida such as C. glabrata , C. tropicalis and C. krusei have been increasingly reported. Identification of Candida species is essential for effective antifungal therapy and for infection control purposes. In the present study the...

K.E.M. Hospital, Parel, Mumbai-400012. Abstract Due to cost and complexity, reference broth microdilution antifungal susceptibility method is not feasible in resource constraint setting. Therefore here is a need to develop a cost effective method which would help in simultaneous rapid identification of Candida species and performance of disc diffusion susceptibility testing. Comparison of resul...

CHROMagar Candida medium is used for the isolation and identification of Candida species, but it does not differentiate Candida albicans from Candida dubliniensis. This differentiation can be achieved by using Pal's agar, which cannot be used in primary isolation. We have combined both media to obtain a new medium that can be used for the isolation and identification of C. dubliniensis in prima...

Background and Purpose: The epidemiological alteration in the distribution of Candida species, as well as the significantly increasing trend of either intrinsic or acquired resistance of some of these fungi highlights the need for a reliable method for the identification of the species. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is one of the methods facilitating the quick and precise identification of Ca...

A comparison of several media, i.e., potato dextrose agar with olive oil (Oil-PDA), modified Dixon agar (mDIX) and variations of Leeming and Notman agar (LNA) for the isolation and growth of Malassezia and Candida species was examined. Since LNA supported the highest growth of Malassezia species its key components, i.e., ox bile, glycerol monostearate, glycerol and Tween 60, were added to CHROM...

CHROMagar Candida is a new differential culture medium that allows selective isolation of yeasts and simultaneously identifies colonies of Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis and Candida krusei. We evaluated this medium and compared it with a reference medium, Sabouraud glucose agar, for the presumptive identification of yeast species isolated directly on the medium from 1150...

CHROMagar Candida medium was inoculated with a variety of clinical samples (n = 282) by using membrane filtration instead of swabbing or streaking. This modified CHROMagar procedure increased the ability to detect yeast by 16.7%. Compared to an enzymatic two-step membrane filtration method with fluorogenic substrates, it yielded similar recovery but was slower.

We compared results of disk diffusion antifungal susceptibility testing from Candida sp. strains passaged on CHROMagar and on potato dextrose agar. The overall categorical agreements for fluconazole and voriconazole disk testing were 95% and 98% with 0% and 0.5% very major errors, respectively. Disk diffusion testing by the CLSI (formerly NCCLS) M44-A method can be performed accurately by takin...

Early detection and correct diagnosis of fungal infection is important for further therapy and prophylaxis. Currently, there are a number of proposals related to rapid diagnostic tests. To those we can include chromogenic media, such as CHROMagar Candida (GRASO). This medium has been developed to differentiate four species of genus Candida. Its use in laboratory has opened up possibilities for ...
