An association between the occurrence of club foot and early amniocentesis has been reported. The largest of these randomised studies was the Canadian Early and Mid-Trimester Amniocentesis Trial. Data describing the neonatal outcome, focusing on this association, are presented. Possible mechanisms for the association and the implications for the development of club foot are discussed.
In 12 infants aged under 16 months with unilateral club foot we used MRI in association with multiplanar reconstruction to calculate the volume and principal axes of inertia of the bone and cartilaginous structures of the hindfoot. The volume of these structures in the club foot is about 20% smaller than that in the normal foot. The reduction in volume of the ossification centre of the talus (4...
Management of a child with club foot deformity that recurs after an apparently successful posteromedial soft tissue release remains a challenge. Revision surgery is often attempted, but this carries a high risk of significant scarring or neurovascular complications. We have treated 3 children (3 feet) with relapsed club foot and fixed deformities, using Botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) injection into ...
Previous reports have suggested that the blood supply derived from the anterior tibial artery is absent or markedly diminished in 85% of severe, untreated club feet. To investigate these claims, we used a Doppler technique to study the arterial pulses in 40 children with 63 club feet. In feet with mild or moderate deformities the anterior tibial pulse was always present; in feet with severe def...
