background coagulase-negative staphylococci (cons) are opportunistic pathogens. methicillin resistance is common in cons and may play an important role as reservoir of staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (sccmec) for staphylococcus aureus. objectives the aim of this study was to determine molecular characteristics of nasal carriage of methicillin-resistant coagulase negative staphylococci am...

Unbiased species-level identification of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) identified Staphylococcus lugdunensis to be a more commonly isolated CoNS in our laboratory than previously observed. It has also highlighted the possibility of vertical transmission.

Distinguishing true coagulase-negative staphylococci bacteremia from contamination remains a challenge. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 183 patients with methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MR-CoNS)-positive and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus-positive cultures obtained from sterile sites such as blood, synovial fluid, ascitic fluid, and cerebrospinal fl...

Coagulase negative staphylococci are increasingly recognized as leading pathogens in bacteremia, with incidence peaking in intensive care units. Interpretation of blood cultures that are positive for CoNS is often doubtful. We describe a fatal case of bacteremia by a newly recognized species of CoNS, Staphylococcus pettenkoferi, in an ICU patient.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have become the most often isolated bacteria from blood culture, spinal fluid and respiratory tracts of neonates. These nosocomial strains are often resistant to oxacillin and other antibiotics (macrolides, aminoglycosides and fluorochinolones). 50 multidrug resistant CoNS strains isolated from bloodstream neonatal infections were tested for sensitivity t...

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a skin commensal classified as a coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS). Though CoNS is typically associated with less aggressive clinical disease than Staphylococcus aureus, there is growing awareness that S. lugdunensis may be as virulent as S. aureus. The association between S. lugdunensis and infective endocarditis is well known, but few reports of native-joi...

The aim of this study is to determine antibiotic resistance patterns and slime production characteristics of coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS) caused nosocomial bacteremia. A total of 200 CoNS strains were isolated from blood samples of patients with true bacteremia who were hospitalized in intensive care units and in other departments of Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Medical Hospital be...

The oxazolidinone antibiotic linezolid has demonstrated potent antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacterial pathogens, including methicillin-resistant staphylococci. This article systematically reviews the published literature for reports of linezolid-resistant Staphylococcus (LRS) infections to identify epidemiological, microbiological and clinical features for these infections. Line...

conclusions vancomycin, but not teicoplanin, can be considered an effective antibiotic of choice for controlling infections caused by mdr cons in gorgan, depending on the bacterial species. background coagulase-negative staphylococci (cons) are clinically important, especially in nosocomial and neonatal infections. the increasing emergence of glycopeptide-resistant cons has made these agents th...

OBJECTIVE To study late onset systemic infections with coagulase negative staphylococci. METHODS Prospective longitudinal study of coagulase negative staphylococcal infection in 18 Australasian neonatal nurseries. RESULTS From 1991 to 2000 inclusive, there were 1281 cases of coagulase negative staphylococcal (CoNS) sepsis, comprising 57.1% of all late onset infections. The male/female ratio...
