This study evaluates the effect of recombinant human stem cell factor (SCF) on the in vitro response of human bone marrow progenitor cells to irradiation. Light density nonadherent mononuclear cells were isolated from human bone marrow and resuspended in either semisolid culture or liquid culture with or without 100 ng/ml SCF. After 24 h in culture, cells were irradiated and assessed for surviv...

INTRODUCTION This study aimed to identify airborne fungi in São Luis, Maranhão, Brazil, to determine the prevalent genera and to correlate these genera with the area and season. METHODS In total, 1,510 colony-forming units (CFUs) of airborne fungi were isolated from the north, south, east and west sides and from the center of the city from January to December 2007. The samples were collected ...

BACKGROUND Lung contusion (LC) followed by hemorrhagic shock (HS) causes persistent bone marrow (BM) dysfunction lasting up to 7 d after injury. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells that can hasten healing and exert protective immunomodulatory effects. We hypothesize that MSCs can attenuate BM dysfunction after combined LCHS. MATERIALS AND METHODS Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = ...

Despite several studies reporting Penicillium as one of the most frequent fungal genera in cork planks, the isolates were rarely identified to species level. We conducted a detailed study to identify Penicillium species from the field to the factory environment prior to and after boiling the cork planks. A total of 84 samples were analyzed. Of the 486 Penicillium isolates phenotypically identif...

The present study was conducted in order to monitor the presence of in extensive and modified extensive shrimp culture systems. In extensive system, count ranged from 180 to 380 cfu ml-1 and 187 to 668 ml in modified extensive system. In the present study sediment registered highest load in both systems (1725-2708 cfu g and 2019 to 5699 cfu g ). In extensive system, percentage distribution of i...

In the clinical development of new anti-tuberculosis drugs, the most important step is efficient Phase II studies to show whether the drug is likely to be able to shorten treatment and with what other drugs it has the greatest sterilizing activity. The use of non-linear mixed effects modelling applied to serial sputum cfu counts appears to be the most effective technique, but we know little abo...

The aim of this study was to assess the volume of airborne fungi in the indoor and outdoor environment of poultry and cattle houses in the Mazandaran Province in Iran. Indoor and outdoor air of twenty cattle houses and twenty-five poultry houses were sampled using a single-stage impactor, which draws air at 20 L min-1 and impacts sampled material onto Petri plates containing malt extract agar. ...

Simulated candidemia was produced with 20 Candida isolates at three inoculum sizes (100, 10, and 1 CFU/ml of blood). Growth detection was better with larger inocula. The time to growth detection was shorter with larger inocula. Inoculum size does effect Candida growth detection and time to detection in BACTEC 9240 automated systems.

Two novel preanalysis sample treatment tools were evaluated in combination with four DNA extraction kits for the selective isolation of bacterial DNA from whole blood. The combination of performing a preanalysis sample treatment and using a larger sample volume increased the detection limit to 50 CFU per ml.

Heat-treated breastmilk is one infant-feeding option recommended by the WHO to reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV in developing countries. Flash-heat, a simple pasteurization method that a mother could perform in her home, has been shown to inactivate cell-free HIV-1. Since heating may affect the naturally occurring antimicrobial properties found in breastmilk, storing heated breastmilk...
