We describe an open source computational grammar for Punjabi; a resource-poor language. The grammar is developed in GF (Grammatical framework), which is a tool for multilingual grammar formalism. First, we explore different syntactic features of Punjabi and then we implement them in accordance with GF grammar requirements, to make Punjabi the 17th language in the GF resource grammar library.
Template Construction Grammar (TCG) was developed as part of an effort to build a system-level neuro-computational model simulating the dynamics at play during languagevision interactions. This paper presents TCG as a computational framework designed to model the human brain’s capacity to dynamically coordinate two concurrent incremental processes, one generating a message and the other organiz...
We report a computational study on the CHILDES database for learning a word grammar of Turkish nouns. The syllable-based model converges to a morpheme-based model in terms of overlaps in the set of lexical hypotheses. Morphology is a hidden variable in all models, and the search problem for hypotheses is narrowed down by a probabilistic conception of universal grammar à la Combinatory Categoria...
We extend the restrictions which induce unique parsability in Chomsky grammars to accepting grammar systems. It is shown that the accepting power of global RC-uniquely parsable accepting grammar systems equals the computational power of deterministic pushdown automata. More computational power, keeping the parsability without backtracking, is observed for local accepting grammar systems satisfy...
The design and implementation of a large-coverage computational grammar of French is described. This grammar is compared to a comprehensive computational grammar of English which was implemented using the same computer workbench. Although many similarities may be observed in the two grammars, there are important structural d i f ferences which can be traced back to features specific to the F~'e...
This paper presents a large-scale computational grammar of Greek, couched in the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The grammar is being developed in the context of M-PIRO, a multilingual natural language generation project, where personalized descriptions of museum exhibits are generated automatically from a single database source. Although the grammar is still under development, it...
We explore the consequences of letting the incremental and integrative nature of language processing inform the design of competence grammar. What emerges is a view of grammar as a system of local monotonic constraints that provide a direct characterization of the signs (the form-meaning correspondences) of a given language. This "sign-based" conception of grammar has provided precise solutions...
We explore a computational algebraic approach to grammar via pregroups. We examine how the structures of Japanese causatives can be treated in the framework of a pregroup grammar. In our grammar, the dictionary assigns one or more syntactic types to each word and the grammar rules are used to infer types to strings of words. We developed a practical parser representing our pregroup grammar, whi...
