Congenital lobar emphysema (CLE) is a rare lung congenital malformation. Differential diagnosis of the disease remains challenging in an infant with acute respiratory distress. We report a case of a 3-week-old female infant with a weight of 2.1 kg who presented respiratory distress related to CLE. Left upper lobectomy was performed and she had an uneventful recovery.
Congenital lobar emphysema is cause of infantile respiratory distress and diagnosed by lobar overaeration, mediastinal shift and/or compression of the adjacent lobe. However, concomitant congenital heart disease with this clinical condition is not uncommon, and there is no uniform consensus about the treatment strategy in these particular cases. We present a child who was treated with division ...
Congenital lobar emphysema in infants is a disorder that is detected most often in newborns or young infants. We report here the case of a 4-month-old infant who at two months suddenly presented upper respiratory infections, treated symptomatically, but evolution showed shortness of breath, wheezing, weight deficit. Thoracic ultrasound revealed left upper lobe hyperinflation causing mediastinal...
The common congenital lung malformations have traditionally been divided into separate pathological entities such as pulmonary airway malformations, cystic adenomatoid malformations, congenital lobar emphysema, intra or extra pulmonary sequestrations, bronchogenic and foregut cysts. Some may produce respiratory compromise immediately after birth or even in utero. The management of such life thr...
Infants delivered prematurely often have respiratory distress related to surfactant deficiency or pneumonia. The current case describes a premature neonate who presented with increased work of breathing and recurrent left pneumothorax. Although chest x-ray showed left upper lobe changes consistent with pulmonary interstitial emphysema, subsequent CT scan performed due to recurrent pneumothorace...
Congenital lobar emphysema is a rare variety of congenital malformation of lung characterized by over distension of a lobe of the lung due to partial obstruction of the bronchus. It is one of the rare causes of infantile respiratory distress requiring surgical resection of affected lobe. We are reporting the case of an 8-week-old baby who presented with respiratory distress related to CLE affec...
Interstitial pulmonary emphysema is a well-documented complication of assisted mechanical ventilation in premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome. Localized persistent interstitial pulmonary emphysema (LPIPE) confined to a single lobe was incidentally presented in a 4-day-old female infant. This patient was a normal full-term baby with no respiratory distress symptom and no experien...
