purpose: to determine the effect of horizontal recti surgery on visual acuity and head posture and electronystagmographic indices in patients with congenital nystagmus. methods: this prospective comparative case series was conducted on 58 patients with congenital nystagmus who were referred to our clinic over three years. patients were divided into three groups: the first group (29 cases) had h...

Anderson-Kestenbaum operations for congenital nystagmus with severe head turn have been employed for the past 25 years. They have been documented as being effective in correcting head turns associated with congenital nystagmus. We have studied a group of patients with congenital nystagmus and head turn, both preoperatively and postoperatively, by means of recordings of eye movements. We have do...

The assessment of a child with nystagmus involves first of all ensuring that the observed eye movement disturbance is genuine nystagmus rather than one of the stimulating disorders, particularly opsoclonus. Rather than a rhythmic to and fro oscillation as seen in nystagmus, children with opsoclonus demonstrate bursts of rapid (saccadic) eye movements that are multidirectional (horizontal, obliq...

AIM To indicate that congenital idiopathic nystagmus (CIN) and sensory defect nystagmus (SDN) can be vertical or asymmetric in some children. METHODS Of 276 children presenting with nystagmus for electrophysiological testing, 14 were identified as having CIN or SDN, yet had a nystagmus which was either vertical (n=11) or horizontal asymmetric (n=3). Flash electroretinograms and flash and patt...

X-linked congenital nystagmus is a rare disorder in which affected males manifest binocular uniplanar nystagmus with associated head oscillation. In the families previously reported, affected females have been described. We report on a multigeneration family with X-linked congenital nystagmus with an affected woman. She was a (46,XX/45,X) mosaic. Magnetic resonance images of the brain of affect...

INTRODUCTION Extraocular muscle tenotomy has been reported to damp congenital nystagmus in an achiasmatic sheepdog. We performed extraocular muscle tenotomy to evaluate its effects on congenital nystagmus in primates. METHODS Magnetic search coil eye movement recordings were used to document the presence of horizontal congenital nystagmus in 2 adult macaque monkeys that also had naturally occ...

We report a family in which autosomal dominant congenital nystagmus cosegregates with a balanced 7;15 translocation. Ophthalmic investigation showed predominantly horizontal nystagmus with a small rotatory component and no significant loss of visual function. This finding suggests a possible localisation for autosomal dominant congenital nystagmus (McKusick 164100).

OBJECTIVES To identify a congenital nystagmus locus on the X chromosome and to characterize the phenotype of a 4-generation family affected with congenital nystagmus and color deficiency. METHODS Sixty-five patients underwent an eye examination, including evaluation for the presence of nystagmus and color vision abnormalities. Affected patients and obligate carriers of the congenital nystagmu...

A group of 64 children with poor vision and early onset nystagmus were investigated retrospectively by the electroretinogram (ERG). Fifty-eight of these children also underwent analysis of the visual evoked potential (VEP), and 40 underwent colour vision analysis. Seventeen children were found to have complete congenital achromatopsia (rod monochromatism), being identified by their total colour...
