In this study, the phase field model of crack propagation is used to study the dynamic branching instability in the case of inplane loading in two dimensions. Simulation results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions and experimental findings. Namely, the critical speed at which the instability starts is about 0.48cs. They also show that a full 3D approach is needed to fully underst...

We deal with the Ambrosio-Tortorelli approximation of the well-known Mumford-Shah functional to model quasi-static crack propagation in brittle materials. We employ anisotropic mesh adaptation to efficiently capture the crack path. Aim of this work is to investigate the numerical sensitivity of the crack behavior to the parameters involved in both the physical model and in the adaptive procedure.

Nowadays modification of metallic biomaterials which are used as implants for bone and hard tissues replacement is considered as an important subject. In the current study, corrosion fatigue properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy investigated via Rotating-Bending standard test method and then, the results compared with the fatigue properties of the specimens tested in the same conditions. Scanning elect...

Continuum mechanics predicts that the propagation speed of non-equilibrium information in solids is limited by the longitudinal wave speed, so is crack propagation. However, solids are essentially discrete systems. In this paper, via theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, it is demonstrated in a straightforward way that nonequilibrium disturbance (e.g. force, displacement, energy, and ...

This paper investigates the roles of external loads and specimen geometry on crack path selection in adhesively bonded joints. First, the effect of mixed mode fracture on crack path selection is studied. Using epoxy as an adhesive and aluminum as the adherends, double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens with various T-stress levels are prepared and tested under mixed mode fracture loading. Post-fai...

Interfacial fracture toughness and cyclic fatigue-crack growth properties of joints made from 99.5% pure alumina partially transient liquid-phase bonded using copper/niobium/copper interlayers have been investigated at both room and elevated temperatures, and assessed in terms of interfacial chemistry and microstructure. The mean interfacial fracture toughness, Gc, was found to decrease from 39...

Dynamic crack propagation in a unidirectional carbon/epoxy composite is studied through finite element analyses of asymmetric impact (shear loading) of a rod against a rectangular plate. A finite deformation anisotropic visco-plastic model is used to describe the constitutive response of the composite. Crack propagation is simulated by embedding zero thickness interface element along the crack ...

We report a novel mode of quasi-static oscillatory crack propagation when a cutting tool is driven through a thin polymer film [6,7]. In our experiments, for tools with a large enough width, the crack tip follows a highly periodic path, leaving behind a striking oscillatory pattern. Taking into account the separation of the film's bending and stretching energies and using classical fracture the...

The propagation of cracks in graded materials under monotonic and cyclic loading was investigated via experiment and simulation. Graded alumina/epoxy composite specimens exhibiting a variation in composition from 5% to 65% epoxy, representing a twenty-fold variation in Young’s modulus, across a region of width between 6 and 20 mm, were produced by a multistep infiltration technique. Crack initi...

In this paper, a Paris law-based model is presented whereby crack propagation occurs under cyclic loading in air (fatigue) and in an aggressive environment (corrosion-fatigue) for the case of corner cracks (with a wide range of aspect ratios in the matter of the initial cracks) in finite-thickness plates of 316L austenitic stainless steel subjected to tension, bending, or combined (tension + be...
