The title compound, C(21)H(22)N(2)O(3), was synthesized by the reaction of tert-butyl-hydrazine with phthalic anhydride and further O-benzoyl-ation of the resulting inter-mediate by 3,5-dimethyl-benzoyl chloride. Inter-molecular C-H⋯O=C inter-actions link the mol-ecules into layers.
An efficient method for the synthesis of 3,5-disubstituted pyrazoles is described. The reactions of 1,3-dialkynes with hydrazine proceeded smoothly in dimethyl sulfoxide under mild reaction conditions to produce 3,5-disubstituted pyrazoles in satisfactory to excellent yields. A one-pot procedure of the transformation has been developed.

In the crystal structure of the title compound, C(4)H(8)N(2)O(4)·C(18)H(15)OP, two triphenyl-phosphine oxide mol-ecules and two dimethyl hydrazine-1,2-dicarboxyl-ate mol-ecules are connected via N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds of moderate strength and are related via a twofold rotational axis.
