In recent years there have been an increasing nunmber of articles and studies on the topic of disseminated intravascular coagulation. -' 2 3 It is not a newly found phenomenon. The syndrome was identified in general terms in a 1959 article by William Crosby. 4 Numerous terms, including defibrination syndrome,) diffuse intravascular coagulation,: and consumpltive coagulopathy7 have been used to ...

Approximately 25-50% of septic patients develop disseminated intravascular coagulation. The thromboelastometry evaluates whole blood clot formation and dissolution in real time and has been considered for management of bleeding in diverse clinical conditions. We present a case of thromboelastometry-guided bleeding management of a septic shock patient with overt disseminated intravascular coagul...

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a disorder characterized by both acute generalized, widespread activation of coagulation, which results in thrombotic complications due to the intravascular formation of fibrin, and diffuse hemorrhages, due to the consumption of platelets and coagulation factors. Systemic activation of coagulation may occur in a variety of disorders, including sep...

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a complex clinical syndrome, described as a sequential activation of the coagulation and fibrinolytic system. Trauma and sepsis are some of the known precipitating factors. We report a case of nonovert disseminated intravascular coagulation presenting as a huge renal mass in a 3-year-old child, suspected to be a Wilms' tumor. On imaging studies, i...

BACKGROUND Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is an acquired disorder characterized by the activation of intravascular coagulation and excessive fibrin formation. It always occurs in association with other clinical conditions, including parasitic diseases. DIC has been described as a unusual complication in human and canine visceral leishmaniasis. CASE PRESENTATION DIC was found in ...

Background & Objectives:  In sepsis, enhanced fibrin formation, impaired fibrin degradation, and intravascular fibrin deposition lead to a prothrombotic state. The current study aimed at measuring various coagulation parameters to predict an early marker for disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Methods: The current prospective s...

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is the most frequent coagulation disorder associated with metastatic prostate cancer. We report a case of a 60-year-old white man who was admitted in our department with ecchymoses and haematuria secondary to a DIC associated with metastatic prostate cancer. A review of this clinical scenario is also reported.

The diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) based on composite scoring systems using routinely available coagulation tests has been greatly facilitated. Such scoring instruments not only adequately assess the presence of DIC but also have strong prognostic power for morbidity and mortality. In this issue of Critical Care, Gando and colleagues report on the prospective validati...
