1 Introduction Spintronics is concerned with using the spin of the electron in novel electronic devices. The spin property adds a degree of freedom to the electron transport. Recently, it has become evident that a number of studies of spin-dependent transport included also heat transport and the term " spin caloritronics " was coined [1]. While the charge, spin and heat currents were considered...
It is pointed out that heavy atoms (i.e. those which have spectroscopically resolvable fine structure) are not required for optical measurements of electron polarisation. A polarimeter which uses helium gas instead of heavy-metal vapour is proposed, and several experimental details are discussed. Optical detection of electron polarisation was first proposed more than a decade ago by Farago and ...
We propose an effective method for polarising antiprotons in a storage ring by means of a parallel moving polarised electron beam. If their relative kinetic energy is adjusted to the order of 1 keV the probability for spin exchange is as large as 〈σPzz〉 ≈ 270 barn. Using a 80% polarised electron beam with a peak current of 1.2 A and an average of 32 mA a polarisation of the antiproton beam of 5...
We have investigated the electron and hole spin dynamics in p-doped semiconductor InAs/GaAs quantum dots by time resolved photoluminescence. We observe a decay of the average electron spin polarisation down to 1/3 of its initial value with a characteristic time of T∆ ≈ 500ps. We attribute this decay to the hyperfine interaction of the electron spin with randomly orientated nuclear spins. Magnet...
We present an interpretation of recent cyclotron resonance experiments on the two-dimensional electron gas in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. We show that the observed dependence of the resonance spectrum on Landau level occupancy and temperature arises from the interplay of three factors: spin-splitting of the cyclotron frequency; thermal population of the two spin states; and coupling of the re...
Electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) is a method of choice to detect magnetic nuclei in the coordination sphere of paramagnetic molecules, but its sensitivity substantially suffers from saturation effects. Recently we introduced a new pulsed ENDOR experiment based on electron-nuclear cross polarisation (CP) transfer. Here we analyse the time evolution of the spin polarization in CP-ENDOR a...
NMR of the rare earth nuclei in cubic RE-X, compounds has shown that the self polarisation field, Hsp, gives an important contribution to the total hyperfine field at the REnuclei. Both orbital and spin polarisations of the conduction bands arise through anisotropic exchange interaction between the ordered magnetic moments of the rare earth and the conduction electrons. These polarisations are ...
We have investigated single electron spin transport in individual single crystal bcc Co30Fe70 nanoparticles using scanning tunnelling microscopy with a standard tungsten tip. Particles were deposited using a gas-aggregation nanoparticle source and individually addressed as asymmetric double tunnel junctions with both a vacuum and a MgO tunnel barrier. Spectroscopy measurements on the particles ...
In order to maintain the stability of the proton beam in HERA at high electron and positron currents the vertical electron and positron beam sizes must be increased. This article discusses the consequent implications for the electron and positron spin polarisation in HERA. 1 Preamble “Spin”, the quantised intrinsic angular momentum carried by many elementary particles, is a profound and mysteri...
