Pan-sharpening aims to sharpen a low spatial resolution multispectral (MS) image by combining the spatial detail information extracted from a panchromatic (PAN) image. An effective pan-sharpening method should produce a high spatial resolution MS image while preserving more spectral information. Unlike traditional intensity-hue-saturation (IHS)and principal component analysis (PCA)-based multis...

In this paper we use multiscale characteristics of wavelet decompositions and their relationship to smoothness spaces such as Besov spaces to derive a framework for smoothing and sharpening of signals and images. As a result, we derive a multiscale generalization of traditional techniques, such as unsharp masking, while using the smoothness parameter α in the Besov space Bα q (L p) to provide a...

Filter sharpening is a technique for designing a higher order filter using several identical low-order filters with the same passband and stopband edge frequencies but with smaller passband ripple and larger stopband attenuation. The technique had been applied to linear phase finite impulse response (FIR) filters only. In this paper the method is applied on the elliptic infinite impulse respons...

This paper presents the Adaptive Sharpening with Overshoot Control (ASOC), an algorithm for digital image contrast enhancement. The ASOC exploits a properly defined band-pass filter in order to better discriminate the "uniform/not uniform" zones of the input (blurred) image. A more aggressive sharpening is then performed on the textured zones, whilst the homogeneous regions are preserved.

In this study, a sharpening method based on a neural network (NN) approximation technique is described to increase the spatial resolution of thematic mapper (TM) thermal-infrared (T-IR) data. Sharpening is derived from a learned input-output mapping of edge contrast patterns between TIR and higher resolution TM bands. This method is similar to a reported adaptive least squares (LS) method to es...

This paper explains the use of a sharpening filter to calculate the depth of an object from a blurred image of it. It presents a technique which is independent of edge orientation. The technique is based on the assumption that a defocused image of an object is the convolution of a sharp image of the same object with a two-dimensional Gaussian function whose spread parameter (SP) is related to t...

We present a new technique for sharpening compressed images in the discrete-cosine-transform domain. For images compressed using the JPEG standard, image sharpening is achieved by suitably scaling each element of the encoding quantization table to enhance the high-frequency characteristics of the image. The modified version of the encoding table is then transmitted in lieu of the original. Expe...

Sir, I read with interest the article ‘Enhancing digital images using unsharp-mask’ by Taneja.[1] The author has discussed a really interesting aspect of dermatological photography. The use of a sharpening tool is definitely helpful in enhancing communication via images, especially in the context of seeing images on the monitor screens, like in teledermatology, but whether and to what extent th...
