The protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica is responsible for invasive intestinal and extraintestinal amebiasis. The virulence of Entamoeba histolytica is strongly correlated with the parasite's capacity to effectively kill and phagocytose host cells. The process by which host cells are killed and phagocytosed follows a sequential model of adherence, cell killing, initiation of phagocytosis, ...
Entamoeba histolytica cells, the cause of amoebic dysentery, are highly motile, and this motility is an essential feature of the pathogenesis and morbidity of amoebiasis. However, the control of E. histolytica motility within the gut and during invasion is poorly understood. We have used an improved chemotaxis assay to identify the key extracellular signals mediating Entamoeba chemotaxis. The d...
Amoebiasis continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children in developing countries. Entamoeba histolytica infections are commonly observed in tropical and subtropical regions of the world including Iran. In developed countries Entamoeba histolytica infections are commonly seen in travelers, recent immigrants, homosexual men, and inmates of institutions. The disease is more ...
BACKGROUND Stool microscopy, the commonly used test for diagnosis of intestinal amebiasis, is unreliable as it does not differentiate Entamoeba histolytica, the causative agent for amebiasis, from non-pathogenic Entamoeba dispar and Entamoeba moshkovskii. METHODS Two hundred and forty-six stool samples collected between January to February 2009, were examined microscopically for E. histolytic...
The objective this study was to determine the occurrence of the species Entamoeba histolytica/Entamoeba díspar in clinical samples of ambulatory patients in Pernambuco. A specific assay for Entamoeba histolytica was used in this study, which identified no positive fecal samples among the 213 patients. These results confirm that E. dispar is the dominant species in Pernambuco State.
amoebiasis caused by entamoeba histolytica (e. histolytica) is one of the most problematic parasitic infections worldwide. data regarding the effect of hiv-induced immunodeficiency on the status of e. histolytica infection are sparse in iran. this study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of anti-e. histolytica igg among iranian hiv patients. further, it determined whether the advancement of imm...
background: amoebiasis is due to infection with the protozoan parasite entamoeba histolytica. the patients infected with e. histolytica must be treated right after definite diagnosis and no need to treat infected individuals with e. dispar isolates. metronidazole is used as a drug of choice against amoebiasis. however, like a lot of other chemical agents, this drug has its own side effects. thi...
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Amoebiasis, caused by Entamoeba sp. a protozoan parasite, is a major public health problem in tropical and subtropical countries. The symptomatic patients are treated by specific chemotherapy. However, there are reports of treatment failure in some cases suggesting the possibility of drug resistance. The present study was therefore planned to assess the presence and expr...
Genome sequencing of the protistan parasite Entamoeba histolytica HM-1:IMSS revealed that almost all the tRNA genes are organized into tandem arrays that make up over 10% of the genome. The 25 distinct array units contain up to 5 tRNA genes each and some also encode the 5S RNA. Between adjacent genes in array units are complex short tandem repeats (STRs) resembling microsatellites. To investiga...
