BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to determine whether neonatal nasogastric enteral feeding tubes are colonised by the opportunistic pathogen Cronobacter spp. (Enterobacter sakazakii) and other Enterobacteriaceae, and whether their presence was influenced by the feeding regime. METHODS One hundred and twenty-nine tubes were collected from two neonatal intensive care units (NICU). A q...
AIM Enterobacter cloacae complex bacteria are of both clinical and environmental importance. Phenotypic methods are unable to distinguish between some of the species in this complex, which often renders their identification incomplete. The goal of this study was to develop molecular assays to identify Enterobacter hormaechei and Ent. cloacae genetic cluster III which are relatively frequently e...
In this study of the diversity of AmpC β-lactamase in clinical isolates of Enterobacter spp., a strain was found carrying the plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamase ACT-1 gene on its chromosome. The strain was identified as Enterobacter hormaechei using phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA and hsp60 genes. In addition, the species was confirmed by DNA-DNA hybridization. The genetic environment of the b...
Sigma factors are bacterial transcription factors that bind the core RNA polymerase and direct transcription initiation at a specific promoter site. These specialized sigma factors bind the promoters of genes appropriate to the environmental conditions and selectively increase the transcription of those genes. Here, we attempt to identify sigma factors in 5 genomes belonging to the Enterobacter...
Enterobacter sakazakii has emerged as a rare cause of neonatal meningitis, septicemia and enterocolitis. Contaminated infant milk formula (IMF) has been identified as one infection route. A small number of clinical outbreaks have been epidemiologically linked to IMF contaminated post-pasteurization during manufacture and/or mishandled when reconstituted. Currently no agreed standardized typing ...
Enterobacter sakazakii is an uncommon bacterium that is known to cause severe neonatal infection and is rare among adults. We present a peculiar case of E. sakazakii bacteraemia with multiple splenic abscesses in a 75-year-old institutionalised woman, who was successfully treated with 6 weeks of imipenem and percutaneous drainage of the abscesses.
