Among various diarrheagenic Escherichia coli strains from clinical sources, we found that the urease gene was specifically associated with enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) strains irrespective of their serogroups. The results suggest that the urease gene can be a useful genetic marker for the detection of EHEC strains and for the diagnosis of infections caused by EHEC strains in the clinical si...

Enterohemorragic Escherichia coli strains (EHEC) represent an important problem for public health in developed countries. Indeed, EHEC strains can infect humans via vegetal and animal food consumption and cause food poisoning with diarrhoeas, frequently accompanied by hemorrhagic colitis with, in 10 % of the cases, apparition of renal sequelae (Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome) that can lead to deat...

background and objectives: diarrhea is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world, specially in developing countries. one of the most important causative agents of bacterial diarrhea is diarrheagenic escherichia coli (dec) which causes gastroenteritis and this group involving enterotoxigenic e. coli (etec), enteropathogenic e. coli (epec), enteroaggregative e. coli (eaec), enterohemoragic ...

Shiga-like toxin (SLT) and endotoxin may participate in the pathogenesis of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) infection. Levels of release of SLT and endotoxin from EHEC treated in vitro with antibiotics were estimated. There were differential levels of release of SLT and endotoxin from EHEC treated with different antibiotics. Treatment of EHEC strains, namely, E. coli O157, O111, and O...

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) exert antagonistic activities against diverse microorganisms, including pathogens. In this work, we aimed to investigate the ability of LAB strains isolated from food produce biofilms and inhibit growth surface colonization Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 at 10°C. The 100 EHEC NCTC12900 was evaluated in agar diffusion assays. Thirty-seven showed str...

This review covers enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) and enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) infections, focusing on differences in their virulence factors and regulation. While Shiga-toxin expression from integrated bacteriophages sets EHEC apart from EPEC, EHEC infections often originate from asymptomatic carriage in ruminants whereas human EPEC are considered to be overt pathogens and m...

Following an outbreak of enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) in Germany 2011, we observed increases in EHEC and non-EHEC E. coli cases in Bavaria. We compared the demographic, clinical and laboratory features of the cases reported during the outbreak period, but not related to the outbreak, to the cases reported before and after. The number of EHEC and non-EHEC E. coli cases notified per...

The enterohemorrhagic pathotype represents a minor proportion of the Escherichia coli O103 strains shed in the feces of cattle. We report here the genome sequences of 43 strains of enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) O103:H2 isolated from feedlot cattle feces. The genomic analysis will provide information on the genetic diversity and virulence potential of bovine EHEC O103.

A real-time multiplex PCR targeting stx(2), wzy(O104), and fliC(H4) of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O104:H4 correctly determined the presence or absence of these genes in 253 EHEC isolates and enrichment cultures of stool samples from 132 patients. It is a rapid, sensitive, and specific tool for detecting EHEC O104:H4 in human stools.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES A diverse group of Escherichia coli are known as enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) including O157:H7 and non-O157 EHEC. Enterohemorrhagic strains are related to sever clinical conditions in humans including hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome, and most of the recorded outbreaks occurred due to O157: H7 E. coli. The aim of the present study was to ...
