Stone formation within the intestinal lumen is called enterolith. This stone can encroach into the lumen causing obstruction and surgical emergency. Jejunal obstruction by an enterolith is a very rare entity and often missed preoperatively. To our knowledge, most cases of jejunal obstruction, secondary to stone, were associated with biliary disease (cholecystoenteric fistula), bezoar, jejunal d...
An enterolith is an infrequent clinical entity. It is generally diagnosed on imaging or at surgery. It is usually associated with underlying benign lesions like intestinal tuberculosis or Crohn's disease. Here, we report an unusual case of an elderly lady presenting with an acute small-bowel obstruction. On admission, her abdominal X-ray revealed a radio-opacity obstructing the jejunum. Her sub...
We report a case of small bowel obstruction which was found to be due to an enterolith obstructing the distal ileum in the manner of "gallstone ileus." The enterolith had formed in an acquired jejunal diverticulum. We review the accepted mechanism of formation of these "stones" and propose a protocol for treatment of this rare complication.
An enterolith (bezoar) usually originates in an intestinal diverticulum or in a segment of bowel loculated by stricture formation. Stasis promotes its formation. This communication describes a case in which a large enterolith caused obstruction and multiple perforations of the terminal ileum in the absence of any predisposing gastrointestinal pathology. The management of this rare occurrence is...
Meckel's diverticulum is a rare condition with an incidence of 1-3% in general population. It is usually asymptomatic and is incidentally detected during laparotomy/laparoscopy. Enterolith formation within Meckel's diverticulum is even rarer. Herein, we present the diagnosis and management of a 50-year old patient with Meckel's diverticulum enterolith and discuss this rare condition based on th...
Abstract Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is a rare condition that affects only 2% of general population. Only 4 to 6% those diverticulea are symptomatic. Furthermore, having MD containing enterolith extremely rare, and herein we present case 55-year-old lady with Meckle's diverticulitis 3 cm enterolith. The patient presented symptoms mimic appendicitis; however, upon further evaluation an enhanced a...
BACKGROUND Enterolithiasis of the small bowel is a rare phenomenon in humans although it has been frequently described in equines. Primary enteroliths have been described including those occurring secondary to conditions like Crohn's disease, small bowel diverticula, tuberculous or postoperative strictures, and blind loops but those occurring in an otherwise normal gut are exceedingly rare. Of ...
Jejunal diverticulosis is a rare entity with variable clinical and anatomical presentations. Although there is no consensus on the management of asymptomatic jejunal diverticular disease, some complications are potentially life-threatening and require early surgical treatment. Small bowel perforation secondary to jejunal diverticulitis by enteroliths is rare. The aim of this study was to report...
