BACKGROUND Previous studies dealing with the detection of enteroviral RNA in human endomyocardial biopsies have not differentiated between latent persistence of the enteroviral genome and active viral replication. Enteroviruses that are considered important factors for the development of myocarditis have a single-strand RNA genome of positive polarity that is transcribed by a virus-encoded RNA ...
OBJECTIVES This study aims to describe the clinical characteristics of enteroviral meningitis in association with the absence of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pleocytosis. DESIGN This was a retrospective analysis of databases of patients diagnosed with enteroviral meningitis by CSF reverse transcription-PCR testing. Presence of CSF non-pleocytosis at each age group was analysed by use of the two ...
A subgenomic restriction fragment from cDNA prepared from Coxsackie B2 virus (CVB2) RNA was subcloned into a riboprobe vector allowing the production of enteroviral group-specific RNA probes complementary to either the positive (genomic) or negative (template) strand of enteroviral RNA. These riboprobes were used to follow productive infection of cultured cells by CVB2; as expected, positive st...
Twenty-eight enteroviral isolates obtained from various clinical specimens were typed by Lim-Benyesh-Melnick (LBM) pool-based neutralization, PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), and partial sequencing of the VP1 region of the enteroviral genome. Sequencing was found to be a good alternative to LBM typing, while PCR-RFLP was inadequate for identification of enteroviral isolates.
Enteroviral RNA detection in myocarditis and dilated cardiomyopathy is rare. Enteroviral particles and RNA have recently been identified in patient’s skeletal muscle, suggesting that skeletal more than heart muscle hosts the virus in chronic infection. Enteroviral RNA and virus-like particles were found in the myocardium and in the skeletal muscle of two patients with fatal myocarditis: a 39 ye...
OBJECTIVE To assess the prevalence and significance of enteroviral genome within myocardial biopsy specimens taken from patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy and from controls. DESIGN Prospective evaluation of myocardial tissue for the presence of an enteroviral genome by the polymerase chain reaction. SETTING A tertiary referral centre for patients with idiopathic dilated cardiom...
The aim of this study was to determine the applicability of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for routine diagnostic use and for the detection of persistent enteroviral infections. To this end, general primers were selected in the highly conserved part of the 5'-noncoding region of the enteroviral genome. They were tested on 66 different enterovirus serotypes. A specific fragment was amplifie...
Abstract Background Enterovirus (EV) is a common cause of infection in neonates. Neonates are at high risk enterovirus with serious clinical manifestations and lethality. This review systematically summarized the characteristics neonates severe enteroviral to provide evidence for identification treatment neonatal EV infection. Methods PubMed, Embase, Web Science were searched original studies o...
Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) for enterovirus RNA in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have emerged as the new gold standard for diagnosis of enteroviral meningitis, and their use can improve the management and decrease the costs for caring for children with enteroviral meningitis. The Xpert EV assay (Cepheid, Sunnyvale, CA) is a rapid, fully automated real-time PCR test for the detection of...
