Growth directions and crystallographic orientations of solidification microstructures have been measured in Al–Zn alloy near the eutectic composition. Al dendrites in Al–92 wt.% Zn alloy were found to grow along the h110i directions while Zn dendrites in Al– 96 and 98 wt.% Zn have h10 10i trunks. In the lamellar eutectic, a crystallographic relationship has been found between the dense plane of...

Di€erent doses of high-energy Si (0.2±4.5 MeV) were implanted in polycrystalline Au foils (35 lm thick) to form a low melting point Au±Si alloy which can be used for gold soldering. A Au±Si eutectic structure has been observed in the implanted Au foils after annealing at 400°C for 1 h. The Au±Si liquid phase was di€used in the polycrystalline Au foil along the grain boundaries which were ̄atten...

DTA analysis was used to investigate the solidification reactions of alloy A319 with either 12 or 136 ppm of Sr added. Strontium does not affect primary solidification of (Al) dendrites but modifies the kinetics of the (Al)–Si eutectic. The effects of Sr level and of cooling rate on the characteristic temperatures for the (Al)–Si and other eutectic reactions are described.

We have successfully synthesized bulk nanostructured Fe94.3B5.7 alloy using the one-step approach of a self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) combining a rapid cooling technique. This method is convenient, low in cost, and capable of being scaled up for processing the bulk nanostructured materials. The solidification microstructure is composed of a relatively coarse, uniformly distri...

Reaction zones formed at 790 °C between solid titanium and liquid Ag-Cu eutectic alloys (pure and Ti-saturated) have been characterized. When pure Ag-Cu eutectic alloy with 40 at.% Cu is used, the interface reaction layer sequence is: αTi / Ti2Cu / TiCu / Ti3Cu4 / TiCu4 / L. Because of the fast dissolution rate of Ti in the alloy, the reaction zone remains very thin (3-6 μm) whatever the reacti...

Ti5Si3 is an attractive light weight reinforcement phase in hypereutectic Ti–Si-based alloys, however, the proeutectic Ti5Si3 phase is brittle and is easily coarsened when the alloy is prepared under normal solidification conditions, thereby limiting its engineering applications in the aviation and biological industries. In this study, a hypereutectic Ti–20%Si coating with a pseudo-eutectic α-T...

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) can have either high strength or high ductility, and a simultaneous achievement of both still constitutes a tough challenge. The inferior castability and compositional segregation of HEAs are also obstacles for their technological applications. To tackle these problems, here we proposed a novel strategy to design HEAs using the eutectic alloy concept, i.e. to achieve ...

The present study was performed on A356 alloy [Al-7 wt %Si 0.0.35 wt %Mg]. To that La and Ce were added individually or combined up to 1.5 wt % each. The results show that these rare earth elements affect only the alloy melting temperature with no marked change in the temperature of Al-Si eutectic precipitation. Additionally, rare earth metals have no modification effect up to 1.5 wt %. In addi...

A solidification processing approach to the refinement of lead-tellurium-antimony alloy microstructure is described. Liquid alloys with eutectic, hyper-eutectic and hypo-eutectic compositions (relative to lead) were cooled to the solid state in three distinct ways, i.e. by water quenching, air cooling and furnace cooling. The structures of the alloys resulting from the three different solidific...
