A number of reports regarding atypical fractures of the femur have raised questions concerning the possible correlation between long-term bisphosphonate treatment and the occurrence of insufficiency fractures in the proximal femur. However, clinically, it is often confused whether is it a fatigue fracture because of implant induced stress concentration or a bisphosphonate-related atypical fract...

Introduction: Close reduction and intra medullary nailing has been established as the treatment for femoral shaft fractures with a non::union:: rate of 0.9-1.1 % though, it is still controversial. Currently, the most accepted method for treatment of non ::union:: is exchange nailing. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate treatment of femoral shaft fractures non ::union:: via 2 methods of e...

A 78-year-old woman developed an insufficiency fracture on her right femoral neck without trauma after four years of treatment with a bisphosphonate. Her fracture was fixed by two screws and her anti-osteoporotic drug was changed from an anti-resorptive to an anabolic agent. Seven months later, however, she sustained similar insufficiency fracture on the left femoral neck and was treated with t...

We present a case report of a 45-year old man who sustained a central dislocation of the hip secondary to an insufficiency fracture of the acetabulum. At the time of presentation he was on alendronate therapy for osteoporosis which had been previously investigated. CT scanning of the pelvis was useful for pre-operative planning which confirmed collapse of the femoral head but no discontinuity o...

Twenty-nine patients with avascular necrosis of the femoral head after injury have been treated by operation. Multiple drilling of the femoral head was performed, necrotic bone removed and a muscle-pedicle bone graft implanted into the head and neck of the femur. In 17 of the patients the necrosis was associated with an un-united femoral neck fracture, in 11 it occurred after the fracture had u...

OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the preliminary clinical and radiographic outcomes of acute displaced femoral neck fracture treated by closed reduction and internal fixation (CRIF) with free iliac bone block grafting with comparison to a routine protocol of CRIF without bone grafting. METHODS From December 2008 to February 2010, 220 adult patients with acute displaced femoral neck frac...

Abstract Background: Alendronate is a bisphosphonate that is approved to reduce bone loss in glucocorticoid treated patients. In this paper, we present a case of femoral fracture following the use of Alendronate. Case presentation: A- 46 year old woman who was a known case of hemolytic anemia has been treated by prednisolone (with different doses from 7.5 to 75 mg/day), calcium-D 500 mg/day a...

A clinical, radiological and histopathological study of femoral heads from 125 patients with fracture of the neck of the femur and from 30 cadavers was carried out to identify various risk factors. The findings showed that the Singh index was unreliable as a radiological indicator of the bone content of the femoral heads; that the bone content of the femoral head in patients sustaining a fractu...

We report two cases of subchondral insufficiency fractures of the femoral head. Clinical manifestations of this lesion are nonspecific. Radionuclide bone scanning demonstrates early hyperactivity. Initial roentgenograms are usually normal. Magnetic resonance imaging establishes the diagnosis and rules out other conditions.
