Effective team work is regarded as a key factor for success inmissions performed by fighter aircraft in a Tactical Air Unit (TAU). Manyfactors contribute to how a team will succeed in their mission. From the existingliterature on teamwork, Salas, Sims and Burke [1], suggested five main factorsand three supporting mechanisms for effective team work. These were proposedas the ...
Previous research indicates that pilots of most jet-fighter aircraft attend to similar elements of the natural flight environment when flying at low altitudes. However, some evidence suggests that differences may exist for pilots of certain specific types of aircraft. The present experiment examined the influence of operational factors on the perceived structure of real-world scenes viewed duri...
A pseudophakic pilot of the Israeli air force flying an F-15 (Eagle) aircraft was followed up for three years. He experienced about 100 flying hours, 5% of the time under high g stress. The intraocular lens did not dislocate and no complications were observed. It seems that flying high performance fighter aircraft is not contraindicated in pseudophakic pilots.
Lightning protection for fighter aircraft is presently based on the requirements of MIL-B-5087 and refined by the recently issued MIL-STD-1757. These documents specify current and energy levels sufficient to cover greater than 99 percent of the cloud-to-ground strikes. These levels are applied to aircraft according to lightning strike zones established by attach point ftnalysis and tes*. .the a...
This paper explores the possibility of applying multi-sensor information fusion technology to the development of smart aircraft. This technology integrates information from multiple sensors and extracts tactical information to detect, track and identify time critical targets at any time, in any place and under all weather conditions. Such target information will help the war fighter avoid fratr...
Monitoring of tricresyl phosphate (TCP) contamination of cockpit air was undertaken in three types of military aircraft [fighter trainer (FT), fighter bomber (FB), and cargo transport (CT) aircraft]. The aircraft had a previous history of pilot complaints about cockpit air contamination suspected to originate from the engine bleed air supply through the entry of aircraft turbine engine oil (ATO...
Limit cycle oscillations (LCOs) affect current fighter aircraft and are expected to be present on next generation fighter aircraft. Current efforts in control systems designed to suppress LCO behavior have either used a linear model, restricting the flight regime, require exact knowledge of the system dynamics, or require uncertainties in the system dynamics to be linear-in-theparameters and on...
Abstract. We perform a Why-Because Analysis (WBA) starting from the information in the Executive Summary of the U.S. DoD Aircraft Accident Investigation Board report on the shootdown of two U.S. Army Black Hawk transport helicopters by U.S.A.F. F-15 fighter aircraft over Northern Iraq on 14 April 1994, during Operation Provide Comfort. We compare with the effort of Snook to perform a similar an...
It has long been considered crucial to develop decision support systems that aid fighter pilots achieve their goals. Such systems often require automation of tasks formerly performed manually by the pilots, in situations characterized by huge amounts of (possibly uncertain and incomplete) sensor data and contextual information, time-pressure and dynamically changing tasks. Thus, careful investi...
