A controller-propagator system with a FitzHugh–Nagumo equation can be reduced to a free boundary problem when a layer parameter ” is equal to zero. We shall show the existence of solutions and the occurence of a Hopf bifurcation for this free boundary problem as the controlling parameter varies. c © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. We prove the validity of an averaging principle for a class of systems of slow-fast reaction-diffusion equations with the reaction terms in both equations having polynomial growth, perturbed by a noise of multiplicative type. The models we have in mind are the stochastic Fitzhugh– Nagumo equation arising in neurophysiology and the Ginzburg–Landau equation arising in statistical mechanics.

We consider pulse and front solutions to a spatially discrete FitzHugh–Nagumo equation that contains terms to represent both depolarization and hyperpolarization of the nerve axon. We demonstrate a technique for deriving candidate solutions for the McKean nonlinearity and present and apply solvability conditions necessary for existence. Our equation contains both spatially continuous and discre...

We investigate smooth and sparse optimal control problems for convective FitzHughNagumo equation with travelling wave solutions in moving excitable media. The cost function includes distributed space-time and terminal observations or targets. The state and adjoint equations are discretized in space by symmetric interior point Galerkin (SIPG) method and by backward Euler method in time. Several ...

During present investigation, a direct algebraic method based on complex solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations is developed and tested in the case of generalised Burgers–Huxley equation. The proposed scheme can be used in a wide class of nonlinear reaction–diffusion equations. These calculations demonstrate that the accuracy of the direct algebraic solutions is quite high even i...

We study a sigmoidal version of the FitzHugh-Nagumo reaction-diffusion system based on an analytic description using piecewise linear approximations of the reaction kinetics. We completely describe the dynamics of wave fronts and discuss the properties of the speed equation. The speed diagrams show front bifurcations between branches with one, three, or five fronts that differ significantly fro...
