Abstract Background and Objectives: Efflux pumps are one of the main mechanisms for antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli strains. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between 5 different efflux pump genes; acrA, acrB, emrA, emrB and mdtk and fluoroquinolone resistance in E.coli Isolated from patients with urinary tract infections in Qom. Methods: In this descriptive cr...

We investigated the in vitro development of fluoroquinolone resistance in Chlamydia trachomatis and Chlamydia (Chlamydophila) pneumoniae grown in McCoy cell monolayers in supplemented Eagle's minimum essential medium. With C. trachomatis, initial passages at sub-inhibitory fluoroquinolone concentrations did not affect fluoroquinolone susceptibility. However, after an initial lag of 10-24 passag...

Laboratory-derived fluoroquinolone-resistant mutants were created by serially passaging wild-type Pseudomonas aeruginosa on fluoroquinolone-containing agar to obtain high-level fluoroquinolone resistance (e.g., ciprofloxacin MIC of 1,024 micrograms/ml). With increases of 4- to 32-fold in MICs of fluoroquinolones, these organisms demonstrated (relative to wild-type) normal morphology, resistance...

PURPOSE To identify the risk factors associated with fluoroquinolone resistance in patients undergoing cataract surgery. METHODS A total of 1,125 patients (1,125 eyes) who underwent cataract surgery at Veterans Health Service Medical Center from May 2011 to July 2012 were enrolled in this study. Conjunctival cultures were obtained from the patients on the day of surgery before instillation of...

Fluoroquinolone resistance in group B Streptococcus is increasingly being reported worldwide. Here, we correlated fluoroquinolone resistance with mutations in gyrA, gyrB, parC, and parE genes, identified by mining whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data of 190 clonal complex 1 group B Streptococcus strains recovered from patients with invasive diseases in North America. We report a high prevalence o...

During a 9-year study period from 1997 through 2005, the association between antimicrobial resistance rates in Escherichia coli and outpatient antimicrobial consumption was investigated in 20 hospital districts in Finland. A total of 754,293 E. coli isolates, mainly from urine samples, were tested for antimicrobial resistance in 26 clinical microbiology laboratories. The following antimicrobial...

BACKGROUND The increase in fluoroquinolone-resistant Escherichia coli has raised the issue of treatment failure in common infections. Few studies have investigated the possible relationship between outpatient fluoroquinolone consumption and resistance in hospital. OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between inpatient and outpatient fluoroquinolone use and ciprofloxacin-resistant E. coli...

We investigated the contribution of quinolone resistance-determining region (QRDR) mutations to fluoroquinolone (enrofloxacin, orbifloxacin and danofloxacin) susceptibility in 58 Mycoplasma bovis isolates from dairy cattle in Japan. Fluoroquinolone non-resistant isolates (fluoroquinolone-MICs≤2 μg/ml) possessed no QRDR mutations (19 isolates) or Ser83Leu in GyrA (32 isolates). Fluoroquinolone-r...

The relationship between prior fluoroquinolone use and levofloxacin resistance in Helicobacter pylori infection is unknown. Among 125 enrolled patients, 8.8% had H. pylori isolates that were resistant to levofloxacin. Levofloxacin resistance was associated with any prior fluoroquinolone use over the previous 10 years and with the total number of fluoroquinolone courses prescribed (P<.001).

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Fluoroquinolone resistance in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria has increased with the widespread use of fluoroquinolones. Fluoroquinolone resistance in Gram-negative bacilli has been widely studied, though staphylococci and enterococci are also notably resistant. Enterococci being the second most common cause of healthcare-associated urinary tract infections...
