Background Seizures may occur in as many as 1% of children. The most urgent type of seizures is generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS). N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT‐proBNP) has been considered as a promising biomarker in numerous acute illnesses. We aimed to evaluate usefulness of NT‐proBNP for diagnosis of g...

The effects of acute responsive high frequency stimulation (HFS) to the subiculum on seizures and interictal spikes were investigated in a semi-acute kainic acid (KA) induced seizure model in rats. Wistar rats (n = 15) were implanted with an electrode-cannula complex in the CA3 area, stimulation and recording electrodes in the subiculum and another recording electrode at the contralateral motor...

Focal seizures often secondarily generalize but the reverse is much less frequently documented. The idiopathic generalized epilepsies have the EEG signature of generalized, or bilaterally synchronous spike wave activity and although focal features can be seen, seizures are usually generalized once they commence. Although focal seizures can be seen in some syndromes, it is not well recognized th...

Chronic benzodiazepine (BDZ) abuse is currently treated with detoxification using a low-dose flumazenil infusion, a relatively recently developed and promising procedure. Given the possibility reported in the literature of the occurrence of generalized seizures during therapeutic BDZ detoxification, we usually administer preventive antiepileptic drug (AED) therapy. We describe two patients with...

Recent experimental and clinical studies have provided diverse insight into the mechanisms of human focal seizure initiation and propagation. Often these findings exist at different scales of observation, and are not reconciled into a common understanding. Here we develop a new, multiscale mathematical model of cortical electric activity with realistic mesoscopic connectivity. Relating the mode...

One hundred and two patients suffering from seizures, with focal EEG signs (101 cases) and focal seizures but generalized EEG abnormalities (one case) were divided into tumour (twenty-one cases) and non-tumour (eighty-one cases) groups on the basis of contrast radiological studies. Retrospective analysis of various clinical data and EEG abnormalities, determined before the contrast radiological...

Background: Gap junctions (GJs) provide direct intercellular communications that are formed by hexameric protein subunits, called connexin (Cx). The role of Cxs in epileptogenesis has not received sufficient attention. Hippocampus with critical function in epileptogenesis has a wide network of GJs. We examined the protein expression levels of hippocampal Cx36 (the prominent Cx present between G...

Abstract Backgraound: Febrile seizure is the most common pediatric neurologic problem. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and related risk factors for subsequent afebrile seizures after the first febrile seizure in children. Methods: In a longitudinal study , all children aged 6 months to 6years with first febrile seizure admitted between March 2004 to August 2005 t...

An abandoned 8-year-old male child, who was subjected to physical abuse, presented with abnormal behaviour and focal seizures. The focal seizures included involuntary running attacks (epilepsia cursiva) and uncontrollable laughter (gelastic epilepsy). The occurrence of cursive and gelastic seizures in the same patient is extremely rare. These fits were probably a late sequel of head trauma.
