Rhodotorula is an emerging opportunistic pathogen, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Many cases of fungemia associated with catheters, endocarditis, peritonitis, meningitis, and endophthalmitis are infections incited by this yeast. The main purpose of this study was to review all cases of Rhodotorula infection reported in the literature and to describe risk factors, underlying conditi...

To define the risk factors related to the occurrence of fungemia in children infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), we performed a matched case-control study. During a 6-year period (1987-1993), fungemia developed in 22 (6.3%) of 347 HIV-infected children observed at the Pediatric Branch of the National Cancer Institute. Each of these 22 cases was matched by age and gender with three...

The primary objective of the study was to investigate the risk factors for Histoplasma capsulatum fungemia. We conducted a retrospective case-control study among patients with histoplasmosis seen at Mayo Clinic in Rochester from 1 January 1991 through 31 December 2005. Blood cultures were prepared from specimens obtained from 111 patients with a diagnosis of histoplasmosis of which 55 had demon...

Mucormycosis fungemia is rarely documented since blood cultures are nearly always negative. We describe a case of Mucor circinelloides fungemia in a patient with a history of a sinus infection, sarcoidosis, and IgG deficiency. The identity of the isolate was supported by its microscopic morphology and its ability to convert into yeast forms under anaerobic conditions. The early detection, initi...

Candida lusitaniae is an infrequent cause of fungemia. We identified 12 cases of C. lusitaniae fungemia that occurred at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center from 1988 to 1999. The mean age of patients was 48 years (range 20--70 years). Eight patients had hematologic malignancy or had received a bone marrow transplant, and 4 had a solid tumor. Most patients (75%) were neutropeni...

Fungemia is a rare complication of Sporothrix schenckii infection and has always been associated with disseminated sporotrichosis. We describe an immunocompetent patient with localized lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis from whose blood the fungus was isolated. A lysis-centrifugation blood culture system may have improved our ability to detect low-level S. schenckii fungemia.

D-Arabinitol (DA) is a useful diagnostic marker for candidiasis in patients with neutropenia and other high-risk groups, but its use in unselected patients with a broad range of underlying diseases and conditions has not been studied. We used an automated enzymatic fluorometric assay to measure serum DA/creatinine ratios (DA/cr's) in 30 healthy adults, 100 hospitalized controls without Candida ...

Fungemia is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Various techniques have been introduced to diagnose fungemia such as conventional broth culture medium, by blind or macroscopic subculture, vented and aerated biphasic culture medium, lysis Þ ltration agitated culture medium, radiometric and nonradiometric methods, lysis centrifugation method, etc..[1] Of these, lysis-centrifugatio...

Probiotics are commonly prescribed as an adjuvant in the treatment of antibiotic-associated diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile. We report the case of an immunocompromised 73-year-old patient on chemotherapy who developed Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii fungemia in a central venous catheter during treatment of antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis with the probiotic Saccha...

INTRODUCTION The prevalence of nosocomial fungemia has increased worldwide, and mortality caused by this disease is high. OBJECTIVE To assess progress in the last decade, and the prevalence and profile of fungal agents isolated in blood cultures performed in a tertiary university hospital. METHOD All the results of blood cultures processed at Hospital das Clínicas, Universidade Federal de M...
