Well-defined metallic nanobowls can be prepared by extending the concept of a protecting group to colloidal synthesis. Magnetic nanoparticles are employed as "protecting groups" during the galvanic replacement of silver with gold. The replacement reaction is accompanied by spontantous dissociation of the protecting groups, leaving behind metallic nanobowls.

A simple and versatile approach was developed to generate hierarchical assemblies of ultra-small gold nanocluster thin films using the combination of galvanic reaction and a block copolymer coordinated with gold complex. We demonstrate a simple water washing process for large-scale fabrication of highly ordered and aligned rectangular silver nanowire monolayers from polyol systems. These monolayers exhibit unique structure-dependent chemical reactivities for the galvanic replacement reaction with HAuCl(4), and novel gold nanoneedle arrays with sharp tips and a uniform structure have been produced.

Density gradient ultracentrifuge separation has been employed as a process-analysis microsystem combining a microreactor and a separator. As a paradigm, intermediates formed after tens of seconds in the galvanic replacement of Ag nanoplates in high concentrated AuCl(4)(-) solution are captured, providing evidence of the mechanism of the reaction, which is difficult to obtain in other ways.
