Crystals of ribosomal protein L6 from Bacillus stearothermophilus suitable for high resolution structural studies have been obtained. Crystals are hexagonal with space group P6122 (or the enantiomorph P6522) and cell dimensions a = b = 72.7 A, c = 124.9 A. A search for heavy atom derivatives is in progress.

Three strains of Geobacillus stearothermophilus (designated A1, P3, and D1) were isolated from a New Zealand milk powder manufacturing plant. Here, we describe their draft genome sequences. Absorbance-temperature profiles reveal that both the 30S and 50S ribosomal subunits from Bacillus stearothermophilus are more thermostable than the comparable Escherichia coli particles. Thermophile ribosomes formed by the reassociation of subunits do not display functional heat stability.

Cultures of Bacillus stearothermophilus subjected to a temperature shift-up or shift-down of 15 degrees C within the normal temperature range of growth (45 to 65 degrees C) enter a transient adaptation period before exponential growth at the new temperature.
