The large stomach worm, Haemonchus contortus is an important pathogen of goats (Capra hircus) and sheep (Ovis aries). This paper describes characteristics of surface cuticular ridges (synlophe) of H. contortus adults from the two hosts. There were more ridges in H. contortus from goats compared to that from sheep. Total body length, vulvar morphology, spicule length and cervical papillae had be...

Published Online First November 6, 2013 identification of coprocultures at day 0 showed that all larvae in the control group were H contortus. In the MOX, DRM, MPL, FBZ and LEV/TCBZ groups, H contortus made up 97 per cent, 95 per cent, 94 per cent, 97 per cent and 98 per cent of the larvae, respectively. Larval identification of coprocultures after treatment with MOX, DRM and FBZ revealed 99 pe...

Dioxapyrrolomycin, pyrrolomycin C, pyrrolomycin D, and piericidin C2 produced by UC 11065 were evaluated as anthelmintics. Assays used to examine these compounds included effects on the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, ability to clear target nematodes (Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis) from jirds, and clearance of Haemonchus contortus from lambs. A crude extr...

This paper examines the known immunological and genetic factors associated with sheep resistance to infection by Haemonchus contortus. Such resistance is an inheritable genetic trait (h(2), 0.22-0.63) associated with certain sheep breeds. Resistant sheep do not completely reject the disease; they only harbor fewer parasites than susceptible sheep and therefore have a lower fecal egg count. Prot...

2,4-Disubstituted quinolines with additional substituents in positions 5-8 have been found to have anthelmintic properties. A number of 2,4-dimethoxy-6- or 8-arylquinolines have potent activity against the sheep nematode Haemonchus contortus, with LD99 values of the same order of magnitude as levamisole. These arylquinolines maintain their activity against levamisole-, ivermectin- and thiabenda...

excretory/secretory antigen was prepared by culturing live adult worms of haemonchus contortus in rpmi 1640 medium at a concentration of 50 worms per ml in a culture-flask at 37 ˚c for 24 hr and the culture supernatant was used as antigen. the e/s antigen was purified by thiol-sepharose affinity chromatography. on western blot analysis, it was demonstrated that thiol-purified antigen showed a s...

Annona squamosa seeds extracts showed anthelmintic activity against Haemonchus contortus, the main nematode of sheep and goat in Northeastern Brazil. A compound 1 was isolated from ethyl acetate extract and inhibited the egg hatching of H. contortus at 25 mg ml(-1). The structure of 1 was determined as a C37 trihydroxy adjacent bistetrahydrofuran acetogenin based on spectroscopic analysis.

Haemonchus contortus is a blood-sucking abomasal helminth of small ruminants responsible for major economic losses to producers worldwide. Widespread resistance to commercial anthelmintics has created a need for alternative methods of parasite control. One method involves using plant products with natural anthelmintic properties. This thesis assessed the efficacy of several plant products again...
