This extended abstract describes an ontology design pattern for modeling hazardous situations. We build upon state-of-art models for hazards and hazardous events, and on existing standards in the domain of occupational safety. We also present an example of the application of the pattern in the occupational safety and health domain.

This study examined the effects of age and driving experience on the ability to detect hazards while driving; namely, hazard perception. Studies have shown that young-inexperienced drivers are more likely than experienced drivers to suffer from hazard perception deficiencies. However, it remains to be determined if this skill deteriorates with advancing age. Twenty-one young-inexperienced, 19 e...

In this paper we present iRide (intelligent ride), an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) application for warning drivers about hazardous situations on the road. iRide takes real-time information about road conditions and traffic situations from a wireless sensor network installed directly in the road surface. Upon logging to the iRide system, users start to receive periodic updates about the situati...

This paper reports the findings of a study of younger and older driver behaviour to hazardous traffic manoeuvres in a driving simulator. Hazardous situations on a highway and residential drive were studied and drivers' vision and vehicle performance responses were collected. While all drivers were able to avoid crashes, the finding that older drivers were consistently slower to fixate hazardous...

How should we assess the comparability of driving on a road and ‘‘driving’’ in a simulator? If similar patterns of behaviour are observed, with similar differences between individuals, then we can conclude that driving in the simulator will deliver representative results and the advantages of simulators (controlled environments, hazardous situations) can be appreciated. To evaluate a driving si...

We present the probabilistic model architecture for combining a layered model of human driver expertise with beliefs about the vehicle state to describe the effect of anticipations on driver actions. It implements the sensory-motor system of human drivers in a psychological motivated mixture-of-behaviors (MoB) architecture with autonomous, goal-based attention allocation and anticipation proces...
