We consider modification of the recourse data, consisting of the second-stage parameters and the underlying distribution, as an approximation technique for solving two-stage recourse problems. This approach is applied to several specific classes of recourse problems; in each case, the resulting recourse problem is much easier to solve. Modification of recourse data is shown to be the common pri...

Abstract This article explores Machado de Assis's and Laurence Sterne's recourse to humour wit as a critical weapon satirise society, while pointing out the differences of tone mood in both novelists. Sterne belong long tradition humourists whose 'acts aggression' intend shed light on absurdity incongruity human behaviour folly.

Stochastic integer programs are notoriously difficult. Very few properties are known and solution algorithms are very scarce. In this paper, we introduce the class of stochastic programs with simple integer recourse, a natural extension of the simple recourse case extensively studied in stochastic continuous programs. Analytical as well as computational properties of the expected recourse funct...

We consider mixed-integer recourse (MIR) models with a single recourse constraint. We relate the secondstage value function of such problems to the expected simple integer recourse (SIR) shortage function. This allows to construct convex approximations for MIR problems by the same approach used for SIR models.

Measuring and managing risk has become crucial in modern decision making under stochastic uncertainty. In two-stage stochastic programming, mean risk models are essentially defined by a parametric recourse problem and a quantification of risk. From the perspective of qualitative robustness theory, we discuss sufficient conditions for continuity of the resulting objective functions with respect ...
